The soldiers came from the Third Calvary Battalion and executed martial law to conduct raids on the gambling dens under the policy of the National Council for Peace and Order to crack down on gambling which is a source of crimes. Two targets are said to be used for football bets and another is a card playing den.Commander of the soldiers said all the three dens belonged to the same gambling network. An 80-year-old man was arrested after he confessed to be owner of the house which was turned to a gambling den. Five gamblers were arrested. They were all escorted to the Crime Suppression Division for charges.Inside the house, soldiers said they found a certificate issued by the Royal Thai Police and given to a member of the committee in charge of monitoring and inspecting the Thung Mahamek police station. The certificate was given on September 26 this year to honor the committee’s monitoring and inspecting task. JOC
The picture in the OP, forget it, it only exists in your imagination. Because according to the police, the raid never took place!!
Gunna
It's about time the " Cavalry " was sent to raid some of the huge casinos in Bangkok. eg the one down Sois 5&7 off Petchburi Road and the one off Phra Pinklao Road My ex spent a lot of my money in both of them and there are hundreds of gamblers in both. Maybe much easier to arrest an 80 year old man having a few card games in his house.

iReason
"Inside the house, soldiers said they found a certificate issued by the Royal Thai Police and given to a member of the committee in charge of monitoring and inspecting the Thung Mahamek police station." "The certificate was given on September 26 this year to honor the committee’s monitoring and inspecting task." Perhaps this is why the Police were not involved?

Popular Post borisloosebrain
Wow they arrested the 80 year old house owner. Give him a break ! Born in 1934 he must have lived through most of modern Thailands governments, coups, crackdowns, crisis' and he must have a few stories to tell. That should get him a free pass! I say get the old boy a ghost writer and let's hear his life story !

If you stop prosecuting 80 year-olds, the 79 year-olds will complain about the arbitrary cut-off age and then the camel's nose is under the tent. If you let 80 year-old get off lightly, the word will spread and criminals will use 80 year-olds as 'front men'; other 80 year olds will go on a crime spree. At 80, he should be wise enough to avoid the hassle of arrest and courts. I'm not very far from 80 and my generation are a wild bunch.

Kasset Tak
The Thai cavalry actually have horses, but I don't think they use them outside mountain areas and for ceremonies. US army still used what they called cavalry, armoured and air cavalry during the Vietnam war, I don't know how it's today! Thaimaishoe
"...on charge of illegal operating a gambling den..." Well if you're operating a LEGAL gambling den they change the name to "Casino"! The sign outside really should have been a tip off! Oh, and the cops enter through the FRONT door. noitom
This looks like a big time Thai bust what with an 80 year old Thai man owning the house. The police certificate of inspection as recently as September 26 is quite noteworthy. The 80 year old Thai man was probably waving the police certificate at the invading "calvary" soldiers expecting them to then leave him alone since he passed inspection. Popular Post sunshine51
Some definitions just sent to TPBS regarding this story... 1. Calvary, also Golgotha /ˈɡɒlɡəθə/, was, according to the Gospels, a site immediately outside Jerusalem's walls where Jesus was crucified. Golgotha is the Greek transcription in the New Testament of an Aramaic term that has traditionally been presumed to be Gûlgaltâ (but see below for an alternative). The Bible translates the term to mean place of [the] skull, which in Greek is Κρανίου Τόπος (Kraníou Tópos), and in Latin is Calvariæ Locus, from which the English word Calvary is derived. Link to the above... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calvary Photo... 2. Cavalry (from French cavalerie, cf. cheval 'horse') or horsemen were soldiers or warriors who fought mounted on horseback. Cavalry were historically the most mobile of the combat arms. An individual soldier in the cavalry is known by a number of designations such as cavalryman, horseman or trooper. Link to the above... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cavalry Photo... This should completely confuse the folks at TPBS.

seajae
cavalry is used for members of the armoured personal carrier units, I am ex cav originally myself, start off rank is trooper. As per the horses they are the most mobile units, M113(A1's) were the vehicles used when I was there but they have updated since, brilliant buzz buckets to drive. Wonder if they drove their vehicles up to the houses , would have scared off any protesters Edited September 30, 2014 by seajae
