I suspect I have an enlarged prostate and wanted to consult with a doctor to confirm that I'm right.

I contacted a hospital (Samitivej Srinakarin) and asked for an appointment with an appropriate doctor. The doctor they've chosen is a urologist in the Surgery Clinic. That doesn't sound right to me. I don't believe I'm anywhere near needing surgery. All I want is confirmation I do have the condition and a recommendation for the best course of drug treatment. Won't a surgeon just want to hack me around a bit, rather than prescribe medicine?

What sort of specialist should I be dealing with?

A urologist is the correct specialist to examine your prostate.

Most urologists also do surgery, in fact the American Urological Association classifies urology as a surgical specialty. so you shouldn't necessarily be alarmed that your specialist is a surgeon. If anything, that increases his qualifications. I doubt he'll leap to surgery unless your bloodwork comes back with high PSA, and even at that it'll only be a biopsy. If he wants to do anything more severe, of course I'd get a second opinion.

Not uncommon for a urologist to be based in a surgery clinic. However larger hospitals have dedicated Urology Clinics.

Two urologists which are highly recommended are:

Dr. Thanoo at Smaitivej (main hosp, not Srinikarim)

Dr. Viroj at Bumrungrad

Both have treated many TV members,.
