I slammed into his motorbike but my Forza had slowed down to maybe 30 when I hit him on his left side. He was almost thrown off whilst my bike only shook a bit and surprisingly, only a small scratch on my bike while his was not straight anymore. I stopped for a second but had to floor it again when the traffic caught up with me but I got a glimpse of the guys shocked face and his damaged bike before I left. I wasn't prepared to pay for that dimwits actions.

I know you probably know this & it was not your fault but.......

These days especially being a falang you need to be careful exiting an accident like that.

I am on a lot of Thai FB sites & everyday they post phone videos of accidents.

If any car driver had been phone videoing your incident & stopped to give the Thai guy a look

the Boys in brown would have been knocking at your door & right or wrong initially they would claim your now wrong

As for OP I have seen hundreds of crashes & most were avoidable but rider induced due to target fixation

or looking where they did not want to go or what they did not want to hit.

For myself never had a street accident in decades of riding ( knock on wood )

But many on race tracks due to various race induced reasons

So much for my perfect highway record. Silly old bird did a U-turn from squawking with her friends right in front of me. Was doing close to 130 and swerved as much as I could but still caught her front tyre and destroyed her light assembly with my Trekker pannier.

I stayed upright and other than the trashed box and broken pillion heel guard the bike is ok. Still waiting for her to finish the police report...first time I've ever had this issue here and it works differently than back home.

The cable seen is from a pair of iem that I had in the box.

You are definitely one of the guys who needs to switch to argumentum ad hominem and personal attacks when you are lacking arguments or misunderstood something. Good we have clarified this now.

Sorry, English is not my mother tongue and Latin is definitely a foreign language to me. Do they still speak Latin in your part of the world? That would account for your outdated thoughts on safety and motorcycling skills.

Thanks...have already left the station on my bike. I always keep an ATM card handy for such emergencies.

Still don't understand how her failure to yield results in my wallet becoming lighter.

Thats indeed strange. In my accident the fault was clearly the other person and Police agreed. Still they kept both bikes till the repair costs for my bike were clear and i got the money.

But if you have paid everything i guess there is no reason to mistrust the farang anymore wink.png

Well you spilt her curry all over the road. Was that included in the claim for damages? I also expect the aggrieved party was fully licensed, taxed and insured?

I can't speak as to her situation; I am. The old lady, non-confrontational that she is, handled everything.

Alls I got was "she's old and didn't see you". Don't understand how that is my problem either, but whatever.

Ll2 says -- dont forget, it is always your fault as a farang here..This isnt entirely true .Last year i had a serious accident where a unlicensed ,uninsured drunk ,legally blind and deaf in one 71yo driver cut me off on as well as hit and run on petkasem road headed towards Kanchanaburi.Left me with 2 broken hands and a cracked tailbone in 7 places. After 6 months i was summonsed to court to hear the charges against the driver, before proceeeding the judge told us to try to come to an agreement so I wanted injury compo and some other minor costs paid for ,They refused blatantly saying to my face that westerners are rich and will never pay such a person. After deliberating the judge makes his ruling 2 yrs jail time for all charges and blasted the thais for having this so called rasict mentality .They were shocked beyong belief and again i was threatened ,Next is the civil court in about 3 months time .Strike 1 up for the westerner winning

I am not upset about the money as she only got 6,000 out of me. Not upset about the bike either...it can be repaired. I lost 5 hours and initially she lied to the police. Said she was fully stopped along the white line and my box hit her! As if that happened, her rear would be facing the direction my bike was going (just like her bike got spun around when I hit her front) and it would be possible I would have damaged her back, she eventually changed her tune.

Sorry to hear about your accident Dave

Sorry also to hear as I hear so often the blame is automatically directed at you/foreigners.

Many times I have heard at accident scenes many Thai's assume you cannot speak nor understand Thai

So right away try to poison the cops opinion. Many times they are surprised though when a foreigner

speaks up in Thai telling the cop what really happened.

Which is why it is a nicety to have 1st class insurance ...call the company & let them fight it out too.

Although I also do not carry such insurance on the scooter just the full sized bike.

Anyway glad your ok & it was not as big as it could have been

mainly none hurt....always a good thing

I carry first class on everything. Just for the peace of mind in a situation like this.

And it's cheap enuf.

The accidents often happen near the thais home, where there are relatives and friends who rush to the scene. And thais mostly dont travel alone. And they often have no insurance that would pay the damage. So they stick together and blame the other party. Guess they would do it with with a thai too, not only with farangs.

As i said, police said it was the thais fault when the airblade hit my back. So not "always the farangs fault". But it was a nightmare to get some money for the damage. The whole thai family came to the police station, the mother blamed me and implied that i was lying about the damage and of course they all said they dont have so much money. So at the end i agreed to get half of the money, just to get my bike back and finish this nightmare. First class insurance would have helped a lot.

I had thankfully so far only 1 fall on a bike. Driving around Clock tower in Chiang Rai after rain. As usual my stupidity got used to UK rules where people on a roundabout have priority, but not here had to brake not to get hit by a car and front wheel just slid and I fell down. Nothing major some cosmetic damage, few parts replaced. In CR I'm scared to drive at times, there have been so many moments when I was certain I was a goner, like I flock of sheeps running onto motorway when I was doing 140 I could feel the fool touching my leg as I was passing them by.

As a spectator well yes, before going to Hua Hin from Samut Prakan I filled in petrol at Esso. I had to go throgh the lane of traffic to opposite side of the road to get going. Looked around everything was clear, I drove into safe zone and stopped to let cars go before joining the lane. Then I saw bike flying with 2 people on it. I saw a pickup behind me just driving off from the petrol station without looking around at all. Loud bang, and in rear mirror I saw 2 people flying high in the air like bags of potatoes, bike panels flying in pieces. Obviously drivers had shorts and t-shirts with no helmets.

I do carry 1st class on my truck & motorcycle

Memory serves - always a risky venture - 4500 baht for 90% of cost.

If you want I can give you exact cost when I am home again first of Nov. My contract here is over, just doing the extras now (love extras - all by the hour) then haul the iron home, give it a bath, and jump on the bird.

Bought it new in Nov 2013 for 70 something baht. So roughly 5% of bikes value when new.

Premiums will decrease every year as the value goes down.

But nice to know that a fone call and an agent/investigator will arrive and handle everything - police, second and third parties, towing, bail bond (YIKES !!!) Been a while since I needed one of those !!!

Just got back to CNX yesterday, and had a renewal notice waiting for me.

Last Nov - insured for 53,500 baht - 4,755.08 baht

Renewal notice - insured for 43,000 - 3,827.39 baht

As you can see - I can t trust my memory !

I was at a T junction making a right turn. Car was sitting in the middle of the lane on my right (literally just sitting there parked in the middle of the road). I tried to look around as best I could and I didn't see anything coming, and the eft side was clear so I started to pull out to turn. As soon as I did a moped with 3 teens came flying around the car in the road and t-boned me. I came out with a bit of road rash and soreness, thankfully I was wearing a helmet because my head took a pretty good bump. None of them were wearing a helmet and they had some nasty cuts and 1 had to get stitches on his cheek. My bike also came out okay, just a few scratches and a broken mirror. Thankfully I was on my scooter and not my big bike.

OP:

>Feel free to share your stories of crashes and near misses so that we can all learn from it.

OK, i feel free today. I had the chance to test my safety gear today and i can tell you, it worked, even riding on a scooter laugh.png

Some of you may remember my basic scooter gear i always wear on scooter rides longer than, lets say 5km. Looks like this in the dark:

post-129800-0-21712400-1412088252_thumb.

Its an unexpensive full face helmet, a RevIt-jacket with back protector, RevIt gloves, work boots and 5.11 Taclite Pro pants.

Was a bit in a hurry today and it started raining. Instead of stopping and taking my rain gear out i decided to go on, hoping rain will stop soon. Of course rain got stronger. When i passed an overfly it happened. I was going downhill on the bridge when suddenly my wheels lost traction. Funny feeling, like scating on ice, left and right and left... Whoever rode a bike/bicycle on ice knows how it feels and how bad you can go down. Of course i werent able to keep it upright and went down really hard and at a speed of maybe 50kmh. First sliding face down and head in front, then my helmet somehow hit the curb and the body turned and the slide moved on feets to the front.

OK, nothing bad happened as i am able to write it down the same evening, yep, i was very lucky. No discussion needed, 100% my fault, i should have known better. Cheap scooter tires, already 3 years old, rain starting on Bangkok streets, maybe even i was overconfident in my nice gear? I got not even a scratch, just a very small bruise on my left knee, some pain in the chest where i hit the street, a bit pain here and there, but really all very minor.

Taclite Pro pants:

Did a very good job and are in no way damaged. Of course the street was wet and it was just 50kmh, but still very impressive. I can highly recommend these pants, they are superstrong quality. I am wearing them a lot since two years, when riding scooter and when hiking. Still look like new.

Gloves:

The old Revit gloves got broken. OK, time to replace them after 3 years of nearly daily use. Did a great job as i already said, no scratches on my hands. Nada!

RevIt jacket:

Without this jacket i would have bad bruises and road rash for sure. I remember i came down hard on my elbows. The protectors did a great job. No scratches, no pain. Nada! Damage on the jacket is minor, only the logo on the front is scratched. I will clean the jacket and keep on using it.

Bilmola Eclipse:

My hero, saved my face and maybe my life today. Nothing broken on the helmet, visor and helmet did a good job. 2000 Baht well spent. Of course i will replace it soon, but maybe still good for 7eleven rides?

Sorry, pictures are bad, but i guess you get an impression. And sorry, no heroic high speed crash, just a typical stupid accident on a scooter that happens many times every day in Thailand. Maybe someone reads this and remembers it next time rain starts. One moment you feel safe and the next moment the street turns into ice. Maybe it was Diesel? Maybe oil? Bangkok dirt? Maybe old cheap tires? Or just all these somehow combined and going too fast...
