My friend just arrived on a flight from Brazil. While he is a South African citizen (like me) he was mistakingly processed as a Brazilian and was therefore given a 90 day on arrival stamp in his passport.

I told him that he is lucky as he should of only been given a 30 day stamp on arrival. But, being the by the book guy he is, thinks he should get it corrected.

My question is, if he doesn't get it corrected, could he get into any trouble?

MOST DEFINATELY YES!!!!

It is your responsibility to ensure you have the correct stamp!!!

Should your friend stay for the full period of his stamp, and then the error gets noticed on his way out of the country, he will be fined for the full period of his overstay, no matter what the stamp actually says.

That said, the error may not get noticed, the question is, 'is it worth the possible 20,000 Baht fine?'

IMHO, get it corrected.

If his passport is Official or Diplomatic he is entitled to a 90 day stay stamp from South Africa per agreement. But if he only has a normal tourist passport it should be 30 days. He should not have a problem as long as he does not exceed the 30 days but expect it will make him feel better to check with Immigration. If he stays longer than 30 days, and is not allowed to do so, he could well have a problem.
