What weapons can I carry

Nothing's happened but recent events made me think that if ever a mob of guys attacked me I would be defenseless against them - this is not a desirable situation to be in so I'm seeking advice.

If a mob of guys attacked you a can of pepper spray and a baton aren't going to be much use.

How many people on this thread right now think it is likely they will be attacked by a mob?

I think it's unlikely, however I like to prepare for the unexpected.

In answer to anothers question, I've lived in Thailand for quit a few years.

I guess those same laws apply to Thai's just as much as they do to foreigners.

So who are these armed bodygurards I occasionally see ? Off duty police ?

If I genuinely thought Thailand was dangerous enough that carrying a weapon was necessary, I'd leave the country.

Thankfully, I'm nowhere near that paranoid.

I don't think Thailand is that dangerous, in fact it's quite peaceful where I live. However you occasionally come across dangerous people.

You mean like people who are carrying knives, guns etc etc on their person ?

Edit : I know some people hire armed bodyguards and believe me - nobody messes with them.

Some advice - don't carry a weapon you don't know how to use. It'll likely just be taken from you and used against you.

you mean like an umbrella ?

I'm sure being the princess that you are, you have a spare brolly you can give the OP.

Wouldn't you gain more pleasure out cycling that annoying everyone on here ?

Yes, I'm waiting for it, another pointless reply.

What is so pointless about his reply? Logic: danger >> get out...

Probably Police or Military but it's not a good idea to use one because they can easily find out your personal affairs.

Most people use their driver as a bodyguard. It's very unlikely you're going to get attacked unless you're in a Girlie Bar in the wee hours.

A professional driver will be able to quell most situations peacefully and take care of your wife when she's out alone.

However I normally keep a gun in my car, but you aren't allowed to carry it on your person in a built up area.

Where do you see these people with armed body guards? In Bangkok? At nightspots, in banks, in the park? I've never seen that. Pray tell.

Only ever seen it once, went to go and look at a factory with a view to getting some work done, and the owner a rather well to do Thai guy, had 3 lads with him where ever he went and they were all armed, and he told me they were his body guards..

Was there a threat to him for some reason or just for show, no idea...

Makes me wonder how I have managed to survive 50+ years in urban and rural settings around the world without ever having to arm myself... Oh yeah, it's the team of highly trained, armed bodyguards I travel with and the army of intelligence specialists I retain to background check every individual I encounter.

When you have the time to be thoroughly bored, read

It's been pointed out to me once in Bangkok and once in Hua Hin.

If it wasn't pointed out to me then I wouldn't have noticed them myself. On both occasions it was during a night out in different bars which passed without any major incident.

One of the bodyguards was chatting with someone and he got his gun out to show someone who was curious. I don't remember what kind of weapon it was as I don't know anything about guns (they're banned where I come from) but according to an American who knows his weapons it was a good model.

If you had to bothered to read all of this current thread you might have deduced that I had indeed already read "Food Court Tables", but then I am assuming you have deductive capabilities.

I'd hardly describe going to a bar as being in the wrong place.

But if you are worried about safety, it is. Especially bars where guys come in with bodyguards who pull their guns out as a conversation piece.

Well these were rare occasions (only twice in over 5 years) and I believe they were at least reasonably wealthy people so I don't think it's that the places were trouble spots or anything, the guys were obviously just concerned about their security.

I see the title of the thread, I read the OP, OkI think, I would like to know want weapon I can carry in Thailand. Don't plan to carry any ,but it would be good to know.

I skimmed through all the replies, and maybe I missed the one with an answer to the OP question but after 3 pages of replies ....

If one want's to know what weapons one could legally carry in Thailand, one would not find the answer in this thread, sad.png so far.

There was a link, and it turns out that it's not legal to carry any weapons.

But if you decide to go ahead and carry one anyway the penalty is a 100 Baht fine and confiscation.

Thank you for that answer UKrules

100 baht fine and confiscation does not sound like much of a punishment,

Does that induces a fire arm ? If I wanted to illegally carry a weapon , I don't think $3 fine and the possibility that I might loose it to confiscation would deter me.

PS: could you please point me to that link?

That doesn't include a firearm, it was mainly referring to pepper spray, pocket knives, etc : http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/762108-concealed-pepper-spray-expandable-batons-and-pocket-knives/

Sounds like a very professional bodyguard if he is showing his hardware around...............................coffee1.gif

That would be one of the 'just for show' ones.........................wink.png

Two things you should be aware of OP before carrying self protection weapons (of any kind):

1. Make damn sure you know how to use them

2. Consider the later consequences if ever you do have to use them.

Point 2 is often overlooked, especially by foreigners, until after the damage has been done.......thumbsup.gif
