orchis
Is there a (critical) edition in English of the basic texts (tenets, scripture,...) used by Theravada budhism? If this was discussed already can someone provide me with a link? Thanks and peace be upon you. Edited July 23, 2006 by orchis
chownah
Theravada Buddhism accepts a group of Pali texts. The most central collection is called the Tipitaka and is considered to be Sripture. The teachings in the Tipitaka are amplified and explained in a group of recongnized texts called Commentaries, Sub-Commentaries, and Miscellaneous Pali Texts. Not all of these have been translated into English but alot of them have. Tipitaka link: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/tipitaka/index.html Commentary, etc. link: http://www.accesstoinsight.org/lib/authors...fieldguide.html Another good link: http://www.buddhanet.net/wingscon.htm There are lots of others out there. The last link (to buddhanet) is a presentation by Ven. Thanissaro, Bhikkhu (Geoffrey DeGraff) who is a very popular and well respected writer although the orthodox branch of Theravada Buddhism tend to view his writings as being mistaken on some issues.....there is alot of difference in interpretation of the Theravada texts even among Theravadins.
