Solutions to get internet access in poor coverage area ?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I’m living in krabi in a area without adsl line with any operator, without optic fiber and I’m looking for a reliable solution. I tried already the Aircard with True, CAT and TOT but i’m not satisfied with that. So I’m looking for another solution. I heard about a box and a antenna which could provide me Internet with TOT but i didn’t understand what is it exactly but it’s not internet satellite access i think. What I could do please ? Thanks a lot for your help !smile.png

TOT call it WiNet, AiS have a similar service called AirNet.

It's a 5GHz WiMax-like point-to-point link, good for up to about 15km line of sight.

We had WiNet for about 12 months until fibre came to the village (courtesy of the resort next door), worked pretty well, better (and cheaper) than 3G.

Thanks but i asked about Winet they said it's not available in my area, that's crazy coz i live 2mn by drive from the very touristic Ao Nang

Ask AiS.

I believe True also have a similar system but I don't know what they call it :(

Did you call CAT to check it's definitely not possible at all? We lived > 2km from Ao Nang and managed to get it installed for 6k line fee, first in the area.

Often when they say 'not possible' it means 'not possible for free installation'

This is correct if you pay you will get it put in eg pay for the line = cable along the telephone poles I mean to you house.

I have TOT, a 12 m heigh antenna with a receiver in top. My wife called them and they came out and messered the signal, and said you need to get op to 12 m. I´ts working perfect, and I pay 631 THB every month. To get it installed we payed 1900 incl. the first month-

If the original air card sort of worked, try an active usb lead with the air card way up on a pole as the previous poster suggested.

You will need a decent active usb lead though, not a cheapie and need to weather proof your aircard (maybe under a plastic ice cream can)

This is what I did. I had some signal now and again (due to signal fading as the atmosphere changed) from 12Call and True. I figured if I could get up higher with a yagi antenna attached I would probably get a reasonable signal. I purchased a package: aircard Huawei E3131, Yagi1800-2100, roll of 50 ohm cable (can't remember the lenght, about 15 m with connectors), and a connector cable from 50 ohm to the aircard. The package was B2700 and by EMS arrived the next day. Fantastic service.

I put the yagi on a large bamboo pole and swung the pole until I received the maximum signal strength on my computer signal strengh indicator. I tied the pole to one of those cement posts they use for building fences and put some crude guy wires to stabalise it.

Very basic and speed about 2 MB download which suits me just fine, and I can even listen to streamed Aussie radio stations without drop outs.

I have attached a pic of the package deal, but can't remember the internet site in Bangkok. Phone numbers are on the attachment for ordering.

I always recommend talking with neighbors; they'll often have a handle on what's available in your immediate location.

Asking here, where people might be hundreds of Km away, rarely yields available alternatives.

I do not see any picture that you reference. How did you connect the coax to the aircard?

Sorry, I have attached the details of the dongal/air card package.

The dongal is one that comes with an aerial connector to connect to the yagi cable. Not all dongals have this aerial connector. It is a very small femalepost-207577-0-15336900-1413987457_thumb. connector (don't know what it's called, but not BNC, N Type, etc).

In the pic the cable connector that goes to the dongal is the Sai Ko To CRR -9.

If you want one, you go to the post office and pay for it and they send it SMS. I paid for it one afternoon and it was delivered from Bangkok to Kuchinarai the next morning, waiting at the post office.

Thanks for the response carlyai. Looking at the picture, I think it may be an MCX type connector. The adapter looks like a Type N to MCX adapter.

The adapter looks similar to the one I have that I use to connect coax to a TV usb dongal. Mine is BNC to MCX (I forget what I ordered).

As an aside, I use the TV dongal as a Software Defined Radio receiver instead of TV reception.

Do you know what the gain is for the yagi you are using?

I do not know what the gain of the yagi is.

My first solution (before I found the package, cable, yagi, dongal), was to purchase a high gain yagi antenna for the True 3 G mobile. When I was looking for yagi suppliers in Thailand, I found the package, so thought i would give it a go first. It satisfied my needs.

Untechnically, before I had my True SIM phone mounted outside the bedroom window and received a signal indicator on my computer of between 3 to 0, mostly 0 with lots of fading. With my yagi swung for best reception, I have a signal indicator of solid 3 ot 4, and the data packets Tx/Rx seem to be happier with not so many requests for resend.

Tell me about your set up as I am presently installing the cabling in my new house build.

When you write "set up", do you mean the TV Dongle SDR (Software Defined Radio)?

If so, go to this link for information :

http://www.m9t.co.uk/

I use this or something very similar:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NooElec-TV28T-v2-USB-DVB-T-RTL-SDR-Receiver-RTL2832U-R820T-Tuner-MCX-Input-/151096351883?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item232e0b5c8b

To see how it works :

https://www.google.com/search?q=TV+dongle+SDR&safe=off&biw=1070&bih=517&tbm=vid&source=lnms&sa=X&ei=h59IVL39MoiVyQSayYL4Dg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAg&dpr=1.28

A log periodic antenna would work best for direction and a discone for general receiving.
