PM holds talks with Hun Sen at ASEM summit

MILAN, 17 October 2014 (NNT) - Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha on Thursday held a bilateral meeting with his Cambodian counterpart on the sideline of the 10th Asia-Europe Summit.

General Prayut thanked the Cambodian government for its support for the new government and assured them that the previous border dispute would not damage ties between the two neighbours.

He earlier stressed that good ties with neighbouring countries were essential, as Thailand did a high-volume of cross-border trade with Cambodia and other nations.

Development of special economic zones, roads, customs facilities and crossings along the border were also discussed during the meeting. General Prayut proposed the setting up of an initial SEZ near Cambodia’s Poipet, while Cambodian authorities will consider setting up a similar estate in their territory to boost trade.

Important items on the meeting agenda included enhancing cooperation in the areas of tourism, energy and investment. Both parties agreed to discuss the projects again when General Prayut visited Cambodia during October 30-31.

Not really. One is a professional soldier who rose to lead the Royal Thai Army before becoming the PM following a coup to remove a dysfunctional caretaker government that couldn't or didn't want to keep law and order.

The border disputes over the temple were just a Yellow beat up to stir up nationalistic rage to try to influence domestic politics.

Actually you just managed to insult two Prime Ministers at the same time.

PM Prayut, by suggesting he paid PM HunSen, and PM HunSen twice, by first suggesting he is bought by his Thai counterpart and secondly even by a private Thai businessman who he (i.e. Hun Sen) had appointed as 'advisor' on economical matters.

Actually you just managed to insult two Prime Ministers at the same time.

Neither of whom was democratically elected.

HS, for one, has been in power for decades, refuses to allow fair elections, has police shoot live ammo at protesters demanding them (finally), and calls himself a "deveda" (god) who thus can not relinquish power, and thus intends to put his son in power after himself.

he could have gone to say iran, Iraq, Turkey, Britain, The USA, Zimbabwe or twenty other countries....on trade missions , no shopping trips...none of that nonsense... just for the betterment of Thais as per previous practice.

.... in his defence, I only add that the General has stated that he will be PM for 1 more year only, then step down, so he has no need to meet nor socialise with Western leaders (who won't understand the Thai way anyway).
