Could anyone help with this, about two months ago my blood started running hot in my left wrist just above the thumb. It sometimes does this across my face but not so often. It's happening many times a day now and I am a little concerned. Is it just high blood pressure?

It's not high blood pressure. High blood pressure usually has no symptoms, which is why it's sometimes referred to as the "silent killer".

It's also not your "blood ... running hot". Blood temperature is carefully maintained within a very narrow range.

Best to get yourself checked out by a doctor.

I take it you mean you have a burning sensation at your wrist? And as there is nothing above the thumb, I assume you mean below it?

Please be more specific as I have trouble understanding what it is you describe. Is it a pulsating/throbbing feeling? Is there numbness and tingling? And exactly where, does it spread to any of the fingers?

It's in the wrist on the same side as the thumb and it heats up,. It feels like hot blood running through it but I don't get the same feeling in my hand, its only the wrist. I get it in my face sometimes as well. It only last half a second or so and then it goes. In the beginning it happened maybe once or twice a day at most, now its become so common, I don't know how many times it happens a day, it would be in the hundreds probably. The only things I can think that are connected is that I have put on weight in the last year, about 10 kgs and also, when carrying my child up the stairs around the time it started happening, I had palpitations, they lasted for a few days but went pretty quickly. After looking on the net for ages, I am at a loss, it does compare to what some people describe as hot flushes, but it is only in the left wrist, in the same place everytime, and in the face, just below the forehead, it feels like my blood is surging or hot or something, that's about all I an say.

Have to confess I also am stumped. What you describe does sound like a vasomotor flush, but the wrist is an odd place for it. Are you by any chance female and of menopause age?

lol, not female. I should also add that sometimes it does go into one of the fingers. I also cannot get any info and I have spent much time looking. It feels like my blood is hot and feels like a hot flush, that's the closest I can get, but from what I understand, even they are difficult to understand.

Go to a hospital and get a full medical check up and examination.

Also take a look at your lifestyle. Regular (daily) alcohol or other drugs for an extended period?

I drink a bit at the weekend but that's it. In terms of drugs, well paracetamol and Imodium are about as far as it goes. I don't exercise much but I work hard and am on my feet for most of the day. I would prefer to get a handle on the problem before I get a check up.

Look at your stress, diet, and lifestyle, and see if any of them could do with improving for a while.

Also look at any physical stress you body and hands have been subjugated to.

Any big lifestyle changes, badnews from home or anything like that going on?

Take a good look at yourself.

Then if nothing is improving, get a doctor and hospital to look at you.

As I said, I am completely stumped. If you have any abnormal neuro signs in that hand - tingling, numbness etc -- or any evident lump, or if the pulse seems weak or otherwise unusual compared to the other wrist, then I would see a hand specialist.

But frankly if none of the above and just these "flushes" in the wrist I don't think any doctor is going to have an idea what to do with you and you will likely get fobbed off with some vitamins.

Its got nothing at all to do with your lifestyle. I've dealt with many thousands of people with all manner of lifestyle "sins" and health problems as a result, but never seen one with wrist flushes tongue.png

Yeah, I've looked at people who have hot flushes in the hands, that's the closest I can get, and without sounding repetitive, it does feel like the blood is running hot suddenly, the sensation is strong enough for me to notice every time, whether I am at work or at home. I thought it might be something to do with high-blood pressure as I have been working a lot recently but I also don't know what to make of it. As also mentioned, if it were only occasional like in the beginning, I wouldn't have written the post but the fact that it happens almost every five minutes or so does make me a little concerned as well as curious. Thanks for the help, if anyone else can add then I am more than happy to listen. The closest thing I can match it to is a hot flush, but even they seem to appear out of nowhere for those who get them.

Hi thanks, the only thing in that is more stress due to extra work load but its nothing I can't handle. I don't think its a factor.

Try to notice what was going on with the hand before this occurs. The kind of sensation you describe will sometimes happen after the circulation was briefly shut off. Sthere any loss of feeling or coldness, numbness first? Was the hand twisted in a certain position?

Nothing to add except sometimes i feel hot all over (face especially) when it happens. If I an think of anything else I will add it. There's no injury to the hand or anything like that.

I do use a computer a lot but I don't think that what I've mentioned is a symptom of an RSI, it is only in my left wrist as mentioned

It's a confusing one for sure and as mentioned, had the amount of times it happens not gone through the roof, I would ignore it. I am not concerned but it did start happening when I carried my child up several flights of stairs and my heart nearly burst. I had to sit down for some time with palpitations. I didn't feel quite right for a couple of days, then they started coming. That was a couple of months ago and all has been fine. Perhaps it was just a coincidence.

Regardless of whether linked to the sensation in your wrist (and it might be), the palpitations are not normal and could be serious.

You need to be evaluated by a cardiologist.

I would also g=suggest getting a home BP machine and monitoring your BP and heart rate.
