So you went to Immigration, then somewhere for the medical forms, then where?

I then went to the local drivers license office, took the color, reaction, depth perception and peripheral vision tests and got both of my new five year licenses.

They did say that I will need one hour of training when I return in five years.

Ok...you did *not* renew your licenses at Immigration. Immigration supplied you with the Certificate of Residence...actually 2, one for each license.

You renewed your licenses at the Land Transport Office, I am assuming between Dan Kwian and Chok Chai.

BTW, did you go to the hospital in Chok Chai for the medical certificate? If so you were in my neighborhood.

You are correct - sorry for my confusion.

Actually I got the medical certificate in downtown Korat and we headed out to JoHo for the drivers licenses.

I guess my point was that there was no discussion about a yellow book or proof of residency.

At any rate, you got it done.

I always get a bit of a sense of accomplishment when I negotiate a government office, here or in the homeland, and leave with mission accomplished

You and me both - I feel kind of silly in how happy and proud I am to walk out with both licenses in hand.

You require some proof of residency, I imagine your wife would have had her blue reg book with her.(tabian baan) to confirm hers. Out DLT accepts a letter from the Amphur, costs a small contribution to the tea fund.

On 5 year licences your address is printed on the back of the licence, that's how the BIB know where your from when stopped.

As a data point, this guy says he used a yellow book in Pattaya to renew his drivers license:

I will counterpoint with two who said that Pattaya LTO, would not accept a Yellow Book

In both posts just the 1 person (the same one BTW) who makes this claim without backing this up with some kind of experience.

It could be true, would not surprise me at all, but these 2 threads are not well chosen to prove this.

Fair enough.

I suspect:

a ) someone is lying

b ) someone is confused

c ) That office (and perhaps others) are accepting or not accepting the yellow tambien baan on a case by case basis

d ) some combination of the above

Option a, I am not sure why anyone would bother, to ”win”, or to inconvenience someone?

Option b seems very possible. I had a discussion recently with a person who swore he renewed his drivers license at Immigration.

Option c, seems very likely. I the example I cited, the poster also mentioned providing his wife's tambien baan as well, perhaps that was the difference.

Both of your examples quote the same person, who ”says” the yellow tambien baan is not accepted at Pattaya LTO, but do not cite personal experience. That is hardly proof. I would also not say that the post I cited is ”proof”, but it does seem to be from personal experience vs ”I heard”.

Unfortunately, I also do not have personal experience using the yellow tambien baan at my local LTO, as I have just acquired the book last week, and my DLs were just renewed a few weeks ago.

Will my local LTO accept the yellow tambien baan in place of the certificate of residence? Who knows? I plan on buying another motorbike in the near future, so I will try it out then. When that happens I will post my experience, positive or negative.

I suppose we can continue this pissing match, but unless one of us can cite either personal experience, or real knowledge of someone's experience, there probably is not much point to it.

I will say this: for me, considering the almost-zero cost and low effort of obtaining the yellow book, the fact that I now have met the poo yaibaan and a couple of people in the amphur, and that people like official government documents here (I once used a photocopy of an expired work permit to open a bank account), this was a no-brainer for me.

Others may think differently...up to them.
