Police step up their efforts to crackdown on loan sharks nationwide

BANGKOK, 20 October 2014 (NNT) - Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Worapong Chewpreecha has ordered police officers throughout the country to investigate and eliminate loan-sharking activities.

Loan sharks responsible for charging unusually high interest rates and debt collectors who use intimidation or physical violence against their clients will face legal action by the Royal Thai Police.

Pol. Gen. Worapong has requested all police stations to keep a record of people acquitted from prison as well as the names of all well-known loan sharks into their database system.

He has also declared that the police would be taking more proactive measures to gather evidence and witnesses in order to arrest the perpetrators and combat loan sharking problems.

Residents who have any information about illegal money-lending activities in their area are encouraged to report to the police via the hotline 1135 or 1599 around the clock, Pol. Gen. Worapong said.
