BANGKOK, Oct 23 -- Thailand will maintain its constructive role in the United Nations although it was not elected to a United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) seat, according to Sek Wannamethee, spokesman of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Thailand lost its contest for a UNHRC seat for the 2015-2017 term at the 69th General Assembly in New York on Tuesday.

Thailand received only 136 votes, but the seats available for Asia go to India with 162 votes, Indonesia 152 votes, Bangladesh 149 votes and Qatar 142 votes.

Mr Sek said that the loss would have no impact on Thailand's foreign affairs policies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman also said that Thailand received two-thirds of member countries votes, which proved its national credibility.

The outcome of the vote would not affect Thailand's contesting the 2017-2018 term to elect a non-permanent member of the UNHRC, he said.

Mr Sek said he hoped member countries did not base their voting decisions on political situations in Thailand.

He said that Thailand had been a member of the UNHRC and played its roles then well and constructively and that Sihasak Phuangketkeow, permanent secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had previously been elected UNHRC president.

He said Thailand was committed to promoting and protecting human rights. (MCOT online news)

No Mr Sek, they didn't base it on the political situation, but on the way Thailand treats the Rodyias(sorry for the spelling) the Burmese the boat people and others.

It would have been a parody to get a human rights seat in the UN.

Perhaps Thailand should first try to rectify its appalling human rights record on so many levels before whining about not being considered for a UNHRC seat. Just a thought.

Here are a few key words to ponder:

- Rohingya

- child labor

- Burmese, Cambodian, Lao migrant workers

- prosecution of scapegoats

- torture to extract confessions

- hilltribe people being denied citizenship

So from 192 countries votes that where able to vote 4 times but for me those numbers don't really end up but it looks to me the EU, North America and the Oceania region didn't voted for Thailand.

It looks like the Farang countries must have voted for Bangladesh and Qatar. Qatar maybe for the money but Bangladesh just to make sure Thailand will not join the commission as a punishment for the May events.

Its some how strange that Bangladesh could beat Thailand and it says a lot what the foreign governments in the West think about Thailand.

A lot of guess work there and few facts.

A case of fitting events to what you would like them to mean?

It seems strange how anyone with the slightest intelligence could vote for India. But, not about reality at the UN anyway.

Thailand does not have a good record. But some on the list of candidates and members of that committee have a lot worst - and a bigger list of things to ponder.

The UN is one of the most expensive follies in the world,

It is quite likely that the UN countries would be named hypocrites if they voted Thailand into this seat, Thailand has to get its balls in order, you can not sit on UN committees when you are doing exactly the opposite at home , what sort of numb nuts actually run Thailand , you have major problems, Human trafficking , international labour breaches, drugs manufacturing , wildlife poaching , ivory trade , the list goes on , just what don't you understand. bah.gif

The ironic thing is that Bangladesh's treatment of the Rohingya is far worse than Thailand's treatment of them!

I think it's quite right Thailand didn't make UNHRC but Qatar? Bangladesh? I contracted in Bangladesh for the best part of a year and believe me, human rights do not exist in that country. Slave labour in the sweat shops and their appalling treatment of the Rohingya is only scratching the surface. In fact I read a BBC report a couple of years ago naming Dhaka as the World's second worst capitol city after Harare (based on education, health care, public services etc) I just read on the Telegraph Dhaka is now number one worst city (today) http://www.telegraph.co.uk/property/propertypicturegalleries/9478023/The-worlds-10-worst-cities-to-live-in.html?frame=2311073 Men throwing acid in young girl's eyes so they can't attend school, daily rapes which are not called rape but "Eve Teasing" people getting killed by 14 year old kids driving the madly over-crowded buses.... and yet they still beat Thailand? Sorry, that's just wrong
