Last UK base in Afghanistan handed over

The last UK military base in Afghanistan, Camp Bastion, has been handed over to the control of Afghan security forces.

British troops have been in the country since 2001 and Camp Bastion, in the desert of Helmand Province, became their main base in 2006.

Camp Leatherneck, the adjoining US base, has also been handed over to Afghan control.

The number of deaths of British troops throughout the conflict stands at 453.

"This is the way the operation ends. Not with a bang but a whimper" (to paraphrase Eliot)

It is probably fair to say that folks are experiencing major fatigue about that harsh land over in Central Asia, both those who were personally directly involved in operations in Afghanistan and civilian onlookers reading the newspapers back home and footing the bill. Both this intervention's supporters and its detractors will today each be able to cherry pick individual events that happened as a result of intervention, to underline their firm stance for why they are either convinced it was all worth it for any gains both to locals and the west, or are convinced that it was a total waste and an entire misadventure (or a scam). For me, it would be too simplistic to stand on either of those opposite corners. Meanwhile, western media and Governments appear to have moved on, now obsessed with militants in Iraq and Syria.

Combat operations in Afghanistan ended not with a fanfare bang, but (as British politicians would probably prefer) with a whimper.

Did We achieve more than the Russians 10 years there to our 13.

I foresee Afghanistan ending up like todays Libya.

It will soon revert back to Taliban control, now we have just upgraded their military facilities. I feel sorry for our troops who have put it all on the line for nothing.

This war was complete waste from beginning, except making a specific group of people more rich.

Your completely wrong. When the Taliban decided to protect the Al Qaeda terrorists after 911, it wasn't a choice they had to be taken down. Whether or not to stay for 13 years and try to rebuild (or better yet build) a nation is another point. We will have to wait and see if the investment was worthwhile or a total waste. This could easily be the next Iraq and slip back into a failed state.
