Rong Klua border market on fire again



SA KAEO: -- A huge fire hit Rong Klua border market again Tuesday night, burning down 20 stalls and godown with initial damages estimated at about 29 million baht.

The fire last night at about 10 pm was the second time in less than two months.

The fire this time happened at the border market near Benjawan market and is belonged to the Srakaeo local administration office.

The fire was reported to start at a stall behind the toilet of the local administration office where second-hand winter clothes were stored, and quickly raced to adjacent stalls where other second-hand clothes, and sports shoes were stored in large amount as Cambodian border traders were stockpiling for sales for upcoming tourism high season before year end.

More than 20 fire engines were rushed to fight the fire.

Firemen reported difficulties in getting close to the blazing stalls because they are so packed like slum dwellings.

Local authorities have to demolish some concrete stalls with backhoe loader to reach the blazing stalls to fight and stop the fire from spreading.

It took about two hours before the fire was kept under control.

Many border traders, mostly Cambodians, were injured from cuts BT corrugated zinc plates when they tried to go in their stalls to take out their goods.

Klong Luek station police said most stalls burnt were belonged to Cambodian traders.

It was not immediately known the cause of fire as forensic police are inspecting the scene Wednesday morning to collect evidence.

The fire last night was the second time in less than two months when on September 8 the border market also was hit by fire causing damages estimated at five million baht.

This is just very sad news.

Someone refusing to pay protection money. I bet those who have been paying and suffered collateral damage anyway are pretty annoyed.

Time to check if anyone has plans to build a shopping center at the spot...

Really sad for the market traders, probably lost everything. Ive spent a lot of time wandering that wholesale market. Its an amazing place. Shame......

These fires were of natural origin and could not possibly have been set by disgruntled shop owners, customers. or extortionist...This is Thailand...
