Percy Jackson books and others of that reading level

Featured Replies

My son has just graduated into "big" books. He's on book 3 of the Percy Jackson, Heroes of Olympus series and loving it. This is not the original 5 book Percy Jackson series but the 2nd 5 book series. Now that he's past the mental hurdle of reading 550 page books and will be finished this series in a very few weeks, I have to find something equally as fascinating for him next.

Heroes of the Olympics is a Guided Reading Level W, so the next series I get him onto should be around that level too.

Any recommendations for a a science fantasy or other genre for a book-loving kid?

Thanks

How old is your son?

David Eddings is an easy read. I enjoyed the books when I was 13-14 years old.

Harry Potter is the obvious recommendation, but he's probably seen the movies.

Some other series to take a look at would be

All the fantasy books by Brandon Sanderson are ok for young adults, although they are not all targeted specifically at them. He has a ton of them out.

Artemis Fowl

His Dark Materials (you might not like this if you are religious though)

Redwall

Chronicles of Narnia

Wheel of Time might be good too. Very, very long though

Yeah Harry Potter would be a good read. Even if he has seen the movies its still pretty good to read the books. A lot of things in the books never happened in the movies same as some things that happened in the movies are not in the books. :-)

He might also like another series from Rick Riordan, The Kane Chronicles.

I googaled all of your recommendations. I think you have given me a lot of options. The feeling I get is any one of these recommendations would work very well. My son loves reading and these emagination types of books are wonderful and I'm certain he would love them all.

I even just read that some people read Lord of the Rings at 9 years of age. My sense is that it is way beyond a 9 year old. I read it in my mid teens.

My son's Guided Reading Level is T right now, which is G5 and his current series Heroes of Olympus is a "W" or G6 level. Reading beyond your level seems to be fine as long at it's interesting and you understand most of it.

Next question, I bought the first Rick Ryordan books at Central Chitlom but the selection wasn't that great. Where is the best selection in Bangkok for these types of books?

Lord of the Rings.... start with The Hobbit, and progress to Lord of the Rings if he wants to.

I would say His Dark Materials is too difficult.

David Eddings' books... excellent.

If he's 9 years old ... why not take him fishing?

Develop a well rounded boy.

Balance is a good thing.

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card is a GREAT sci-fi novel that is often recommended for younger readers. I liked the Hunger Games series too and that was originally meant for kids.

Larry Nivens' Ringworld. Asimovs' Foundation series.

Anything Arthur C. Clarke.

The Foreign Legion Omnibus by Percival C Wren is a cracking 'boys' own' adventure yarn in the old style suitable for young readers about 12 y.o. and above... including Beau Geste and etc...not particularly PC but what the hey?
