Some guys get a kick out of playing with a farang guy masquerading as a Thai girl and a farang guy masquerading as a Thai girl gets a kick out of playing with farang guys. blink.png

But hey this is Thailand, right?

Nothing unusual.

The reason tips aren't prevalent here is it goes to the small guy. As op states to some extent if tips were part of the restaurant's revenue, I'm sure they be more prevalent by now. Nobody cares about the little guy here or anywhere. The solution is to fight back and do things like form unions. Get off you damn Facebook page, get organized and start fighting for yourselves. Only solution. I'm not talking to any one person in particular btw.

I read the Op, the Statement ... but I missed the question.

Let me give you a tip.

Strange! You missed the question from my post but you still can reply.!!!

I used to tip...sometimes just enough and sometimes over the top.

A couple of years ago my wife and I went to Hong Kong and I accidently gave a waitress $600 HK tip. It wasn't until we got back to the hotel room that I calculated this....woops confusion over currency.

Since then my wife handles all of the tipping and she is a hard task master. It takes exceptional service and food for her to tip. So she must represent the stingy Thai contingent.

50 Baht is 50 Baht. If service is average or below par, tip smaller.

A £ in my pocket is better than in someone else's unless they deserve it :P

If you wish to keep boxing on ... fair enough.

Whether or not there is a service charge at a restaurant my wife and I will also give a tip as well. The size of the tip depends very much on the service given by an individual, generally we would tip not less than 100 Baht even if we have already paid a service charge of 200 Baht or more. It has not been unusual for my wife to tip all those people who attended our table which frequently means the tip cost is sometimes greater than the service charge.

If we've had a good dinner and a bit of banter with service staff then they are in for a good tip. WHY NOT?

Up until the very early 90's tips were really not expected. I remember getting very surprised looks from giving a tip back in those days. Prior to the 90's no tips were expected now I tip standard 20% if the service is good and sometimes thats frowned on. How times have changed.

If it's not part of their culture, why do it. Thais don't tip, so I certainly won't tip. Why would I want to turn myself and other foreigners effectively into walking cash registers?

Then I see they add a service tip into the bill at many restaurants. Who knows how that gets cut up.

I love it when I am in some sleazy slime ball clip joint and the dek serv hands me the bill, I hand it to the mrs, his fake smile dissappears faster than snow off a dyke when he realizes he aint getting no dumb farang kwai tip, the pryck can hardly raise his hands to give a proper wai and a kop khun krap, sorry Somcahi, 20 baht is plenty.

Well thanks very much for the needless and useless information. I know exactly how thai tip, and if leaving 20 baht on a 1000 baht dinner bill is tipping to you, so be it. To me, I'd call it an insult, and a much welcomed insult at that I'm sure.

The most confused post read this week ... blink.png

Universal statements usually come crashing down ... especially statements from meand such as "Thais don't tip"

Another useless post from a person who thinks Thais tip. And, as if you have never said something like "everybody is coming". This certainly doesn't mean every human in the entire world is coming. Get a grip on the English language And how humans communicate bro, it's not so literal. if you think I was saying a thai person has never given a tip, ever, in the history of the world, I'm not sure what else to say about your reading comprehension. My god, what did you think when you first read "it was the best of times, it was the worst of times?" Your head must have exploded in utter confusion.
