booma
Does anyone know if the internet is any good in Yangon and down on the south coast? Thanks in advance, B
SeaVisionBurma
Hi, Can you please specify where on the 'south coast' you want to find out about? Tanintharyi Division, Dawei, Mawlamyaing? or south coast along the delta area. Ngwe Saung, Chaungtha etc?
booma
I was thinking about along the delta area, so Ngwe Saung, Chaungtha etc?
SeaVisionBurma
Plenty in Chaungtha - hotels, guest houses and a number of restaurants have wifi. Slow though, but if you are patient it will be enough to check emails etc. Ngwe Saung - only the better hotels have wifi, and a couple of restaurants in town, although it is improving all the time There is actually a small internet cafe in Ngwe Saung, and the staff member was a hilarious and outrageously outgoing girl named "Love Snow White". Not sure if mobile data is available through MPT networks. The new mobile providers might be up and running down there too - Telenor and Oooredoo Pop in to one of their offices/outlets in Yangon when you arrive and see if they can find out if there is coverage down the delta coast yet. Good luck
booma
I take it from your answer, SeaVisionBurma, that Skype is pretty much out of the question in most of these place?
SeaVisionBurma
I take it from your answer, SeaVisionBurma, that Skype is pretty much out of the question in most of these place? Its really dodgy, even in Yangon. There is a push to upgrade telecomms infrastructure but its taking time. So yeah, don't rely too much on Skype, and be prepared to try Viber and Line as alternatives if you need a VOIP service Have had days where Skype works, other days where Viber works, sometimes LINE - and often none! As chat services, they are fine. Just the voice calls which are very erratic. cheers SVB
