That someone needs to "get a life" is without doubt, but I ask who?

I'm sure I'm not the only person here who has enough of his own life so as not to have the time or the inclination to worry about telling other people how to live theirs.

I think you just did. :o

Hmmmmm...

So many Brits eh..??

Well, I've seen plenty of Americans being drunk, very loud, and obnoxious.. most of the time just loud and obnoxious... not to mention the Germans...

See...it's easy to make a generalisation..

The point is that a drunken loudmouth is a drunk loudmouth.. no matter what nationality they are... so no need to keep bringing a nationality up, it's not needed.

totster :o

Yeah, I've seen that kind of american in a bar while I was trying to play pool. The guy was singing a Bon Jovi song as loud as he could and used to make all kind of obscene gestures at his girl. He was a real bugger, ruined my pool night.

Anyway, I think brits are more to be seen, I have a feeling that there are 4 or 5 time more brits than americans in Thailand, not mentioning other nationalities. I guess an idiot could come from anywhere.

A lot of people getting very judgmental these days.

Maybe the person in the original post was just having a really bad day and went out to get drunk and let off steam. I've certainly had a few (well more than a few) days where I have hated everything Thai. Not terribly rational but I would guess that most long term expat residents feel like that from time to time.

Not really sure what this has got to do with nerds either.

So in other words you have your racist days

I've met a number of people in various countries who were quite full of themselves. One advantage of the foreigner living abroad is that the locals usually have as little idea how to gauge the personality/quality of the foreigner as he has how to gauge the locals. This tends to work until the foreigner's disguise "collapses" under the view of another foreigner (who can "read" him accurately). This is the type of foreigner who avoids other foreigners' glances, tends to hate the presence of other foreigners here, prides himself on hanging out only with Thais and speaking only Thai for long periods at a time, etc., etc.

However, those who find this type of foreigner irritating are often annoyed mainly because their "top dog" status in the hierarchy (the jocks over the nerds, etc.) may have been completely eliminated in the Thai environment. Lumbering, macho meatheads might discover that cuteness, a certain minimal IQ, and even a certain androgyny are in vogue here. Perhaps they long for the days and the environment when their antisocial prejudices were reinforced by majority opinion.

The thing is, though, neither group needs to hang on to these feelings. The nerds can let go of their insecurity and ignore the meatheads. The meatheads can read my signature and realise they don't need to be dominant buffoons to have a good life. Who knows, perhaps there is enough room in Thailand for both nerds and meatheads? The OP can only hope.

Well i just about understood what you are going on about, if your refering to me as a meat head, then your out of line. As for saying hanging around with thai people and speaking thai all the time, , trying to be part of thailand and the culture includes mixing with thai people and trying to learn there language surely? or i may as well go back to england and live, thats right im british and the person who p**sed me off in the bar the nationalality is not important its that kind of person in general. maybe i cant spell as many fancy words as you , but alot of people agree with me on this one, sure live and let live. but we could all do without these <deleted>.

This goes a few years back.

My sife and I was at a watt in ayutthaya and noticed a few young mid 20's Americans that was taking pictures of themselves and some of the ancient buddhas. The problem is these clowns were making finger gestures while leaning on the buddhas, tried to climb and sit on the lap of the buddha and acting like a bunch of loud mouth idiots. Many locals asked them be respectful without success. These locals were giving them dirty looks and was speaking among themselves and was calling these idiots all kinds of name (in thai). Eventually, the police were asked to come and escort them to leave. The policeman was nice enough, except, I heard him say to another thai "au mun pai ying kong ja dee na (better to just shoot them)". I don't think he was serious but made me nervous for the morons just the same.

My wife said to me that I should have told them to stop, but I told her, let them keep being stupid for they will pay the well deserved price sooner or later. If you lack respect for others than you deserved whatever yoiu get.

Agree, Col, most long term expats will feel like this at some point in time, but is there a need for such behaviour. When you go out to let off steam do you act this way? Totally abusive and f... this f... that. I should think not. I often go to a small place in the country which has more than its share of abusive, drunkard long termers, sadly to say many of them Brits.

A nerds a nerd wherever you are.

I agree with you. However, I think I would have had to have said somthing. Someone acting like a a$$ in a restaurant or on the sidewalk I would leave them be and let them get into whatever trouble they could find for themselves, but jumping up and down and around Buddhas is just too much at the wrong place.

does anyone think the same, been in thailand a few years now have a lovely wife and two daughters. I love thailand and the culture, and like me im sure theres many expats that have really embraced the thai way of life. and why not will are all just guest,s in there country. I have a good few thai friend,s , never ask for money and allways buys the beers and vice versa. We go out to a few bars in the evening have a few drinks and play pool, one paticular night out i came across the <deleted> of the year. pissed as <deleted> and saying how this country has no idea of making money, they cant build houses and there woman only like farang. So i found this an interesting point and one i had to address. I approached the <deleted>, and ask if he was on holiday? oh no he replied been here 9 years got the thai homemaker and the brat to go with it. I said your a lucky man to have such an understanding wife. <deleted> that he replied il wont be banging her tonight. with that i walked away. Now this <deleted> was the most nerdy looking geek you would ever see, so my question is. He,s come to thailand because no woman would give him the time of day in his country, but out here he think,s hes something else roll playing if you like, the big i am ive got this ive got that look how much money ive got compared to all the peasants out here. well its no surprise if you think about it why there are so many stories about how a farang got taken for everything by he's thai wife , and never trust a thai person. Well <deleted> him and all the other <deleted> out here that act the same, and go back to where they came from, So we all dont get tared with the same brush.

What a great post! You should re-write it slightly and then send it off to Stickman and see if he accepts it or not. Bet he won't as he'll offend too many readers. :o

What a complete load of rubbish. How can you criticize people for speaking the language of the country they live in and for being friends with the locals? :o

You realy have some strange views ijustwannascreach.

I thought his latest was about the Mayan´s or the aztec´s or something.

Somehow, I don´t think Jews were pissing the world off too much, yet, back in those days.
