The animal managed to evade traps laid by authorities but on Saturday night the starving animal was shot with a tranquilizer gun on a hill behind the zoo and taken into custody, authorities said. The grey wolf which escaped from Chiang Mai Night Safari is caught and returned to the zoo

The grey wolf which escaped from Chiang Mai Night Safari more than a month ago has already been captured and returned to the zoo.

The wolf, which had killed more than 100 chickens for food, was caught late on Saturday by a team of villagers of Ban Poang Noi (บ้านโป่งน้อย) in tambon Suthep. They were rewarded 10,000 baht by Chiang Mai Night Safari director Plodprasop Suraswadi (ปลอดประสพ สุรัสวดี).

The animal is now being treated for some minor injuries and should recover in two weeks.

A rather different story from today's Post :o

Escaped wolf caught after month on run

CHEEWIN SATTHA

Chiang Mai _ Villagers living near Chiang Mai Night Safari slept soundly last night after a grey wolf which escaped from the park was netted in the Doi Suthep foothills on Saturday night.

"After we paid homage and prayed to forest spirits, the wolf eventually walked out before us," said park director Plodprasop Suraswadi, who named it lhong, which means lost.

Mr Plodprasop ordered that it be quarantined for rabies watch after a veterinarian confirmed it had had a sexual encounter with a local dog.

News of a carnivorous animal on the loose came to light late last week after villagers living near the 819-rai park heard reports of a strange animal said to have gorged almost 200 of their fowls and puppies. The zoo later admitted its three-year-old grey wolf escaped from a cage about a month ago, but it did not alert the public, "because the wolf is tame".

But villagers did not believe the story. They locked themselves in at night with domestic pets and fighting cocks sleeping by their side.

Mr Plodprasop's team chased the fugitive wolf into a trap set at the foothills of Doi Suthep in Muang district, and ended the two-day hunt with two tranquiliser shots. The zoo's 10,000 baht bounty went to Pornthip Utama, head of Phong Noi village, who helped with the tracking.

The wolf appeared weak and tired, and had been wounded on its back right leg. It was given saline drops and a medical check-up.

It is one of six grey wolves which the Night Safari bought from a zoo in the Czech Republic for tens of thousands of baht.

Mr Plodprasop said security would be tightened to stop animals escaping, and he would compensate villagers for the 200 animals which fell victim to the runaway wolf.

Panupong Singhara, chief of Police Region 5, said the Night Safari operator could face charges of negligence for letting the animal escape.

Health condition of a grey wolf at Chiang Mai Night Safari is improving

The condition of “Long” (หลง), a grey wolf that escaped from Chiang Mai Night Safari about a month ago but was captured and returned to the zoo, recently is improving.

Pratham Pawaputanon na Mahasarakham (ประถัมภ์ ภวภูตานนท์ ณ มหาสารคาม), director of Chiang Mai Night Safari’s Project Administration Office, denied rumours that the wolf had already died.

Mr. Pratham said the wolf had pneumonia and so was sent to the animal hospital of Chiang Mai University’s faculty of veterinary. Its condition has gradually improved, and the wolf has already been sent back to Chiang Mai Night Safari’s hospital for further treatment.

Mr. Pratham dismissed reports that Long was not the real grey wolf that had escaped. He also said every animal at Chiang Mai Night Safari has been taken good care of.

I wish I could get over pneumonia that quickly, just another case of amazing Thailand. How on earth could a zoo be so dishonest as to swap wolves on us? :o

The Saddest Possible Update :o

Grey wolf escaped and returned to Safari Zoo dies

Chiang Mai - Hlong, the Canadian grey wolf that escaped from the Night Safari Zoo but was recaptured earlier this month, has died after being treated for pneumonia.

Supoj Methapiwat, director of the zoo's animal management office, said Hlong died suddenly last week, three days after returning from the animal hospital of Chiang Mai University's faculty of veterinary science.

The wolf's condition had been improving, prompting the zoo to plan to display it for a few days, he added.

Supoj said the zoo did not inform the public about its death at the time because it initially regarded it a normal occurrence and decided to wait for an autopsy result.

The animal hospital will today submit the autopsy result to the zoo. The wolf's body will then be preserved and stuffed for study purposes.

Animal hospital director Wanna Suriyasathaporn said Hlong was admitted on August 9 and treated for pneumonia and diarrhoea before being returned to the zoo's care. The wolf's body was taken to the hospital on August 16 for autopsy.

Hlong, one of six grey wolves bought from the Czech Republic, was on the loose for more than a month before being recaptured on August 5 by villagers armed with anaesthetic guns and nets.

Meanwhile, Wildlife Fund Thailand secretarygeneral Surapol Duangkhae urged zoo executives to reveal whether any other animals were on the loose and to give a figure for how many animals were registered to the zoo.

A resident in nearby tambon Mae Hia said many villagers claimed to spot grey wolves in different locations at the same time, raising suspicions there were more of these carnivores on the loose.

However, no more chicken deaths had been reported since Hlong's recapture, he said, but villagers remained cautious and were guarding their neighbourhoods.

NIGHT SAFARI / DEATH IN CAPTIVITY

Wolf dies after brief flirtation with freedom

A grey wolf which recently made a brief break for freedom from Chiang Mai Night Safari Zoo died over a week ago, but its demise was kept under wraps until yesterday. Just as zoo officials did not try to alert the public when the three-year-old wolf escaped, they also chose to keep quiet about its death. The wolf's escape came to light only when villagers living near the zoo complained that a strange animal had stolen and eaten about 200 fowls and puppies over the previous month. Zoo officials then admitted that the wolf had disappeared from its enclosure a month earlier. The missing animal was given the nickname Lhong, a Thai word for lost. ...appropriately named :D The zoo's director for management, Mr Supot said the animal died over a week ago.

"What's next to be missing?", you ask ...

At the ever-amazing Chiang Mai Night Safari, it's a hippopotamus that has turned up missing. Hope its fate is better than the wolf's was.

Thais hunt for missing hippo

Bangkok - Thailand's Chiang Mai Night Safari has launched a search and rescue operation for a baby hippopotamus that went missing from the zoo's veterinary hospital last week, media reports said Sunday. The baby hippo was last seen in hospital on Thursday, soaking in a tub of water, the Bangkok Post said.

A security guard assigned to watch the hippo fell asleep and when he awoke the animal was gone.

Hospital staff found tracks leading to a nearby forest in the Chiang Mai Night Safari, which covers 127.6 hectares.

Officials dispatched 100 people to search for the hippo, but prospects of its survival are deemed low in light of the animal's youth and poor health.

The zoo, situated about 650 kilometres north of Bangkok, has been the target of criticism for poor management and mistreatment of animals in the past.
