Hi,

I will be getting a non immigrant o visa multi entry based on marriage from Savannakhet in March. I will have a WP valid for a few more months when I cross the land border, my questions are;

1, Can I cross the border ok or do I have to cancel the WP before and have a confirmation letter form my company or any other documents?

2, When I get my new visa, will there be any problem having a valid WP or non b visa etc? or will the new visa override the WP etc?

3, Do I just cross the border and get the new visa and re-enter without doing anything else or is there anything I need to do?

My company know what I am doing and we be able to supply documents beforehand etc.

Thank You.

1. Immigration has nothing to do with work permits so there would not be a problem leaving.

If you have a valid extension of stay based upon working they may not let you leave though unless you have a letter from your employer stating your job has ended on the date you leave or after.

2. If you still had valid non-b visa they might not issue you a new visa. An extension of stay or work permit would not matter.

3. Nothing

I hope TVF pays you good. You're the man for visa and other issues. Thanks a lot .

Thank you Ubonjoe and sorry for late reply.

Just wondering also wether you could tell me how exactly I go about cancelling my WP and what I need to show the guys at the border incase I am questioned?

Thank you.

Prefarably you get a leter from your employer stating your last day of employement and next you visit the labour office to cancel your WP. The labour office can give you a form to show you have cancelled your WP.

Thank you Mario2008,

Am I correct in thinking that when I go to cancel my WP from labour office I will have to leave Thailand the same day or get a 7 day extension of stay thing? Does the WP get cancelled literally at the same time?

Thank you.

You do not have to leave the country on the day you cancel your work permit.

You have to leave the country on the same day you cancel your extension of stay at immigration unless you a apply for a 7 day extension.

Thank you ubonjoe,

I'm confused about the letter I need to take to the labour office. Will the 'form for work permit cancellation' filled out and signed by me be okay? because the thai website says it does. Is there any other documents I need.

If not, what needs to be included in the letter that my employer has to sign? is it a paragraph just literally stating my last day and then signed?

Once i have submitted it to the labour office, do i then go to immigration and cancel my extension of stay and leave thailand the same day?

Thank you.

You can sign the work permit cancellation form. All you should need is your work permit and passport.

All the letter for your job being terminated needs to say is that and the effective date. Most immigration office will allow you to do it a couple of days early and post date the cancellation to the date on the letter. Or you would have to do it on that date and leave or apply for a 7 day extension.

Thank you ubonjoe,

I live really close to the border, my immigration and labour office so I should be able to get all of this done in half a day.

Okay so in conclusion, my step-by-step for this process is the following;

1, Have 'form of WP cancellation' filled in and signed by me, my WP and passport and go to the labour office and they will give me a piece of paper/receipt once cancelled.

2, I then go to immigration with the letter from my boss saying my last day of work and confirmation paragraph, also signed and dated by my boss. They will then stamp my passport and tell me I have to leave that day or get a 7 day extension.

3, I then leave Thailand and show the border guards my receipt from the labour office and stamp from immigration and thats it.

Does this sound correct or have I missed something? Any other documents etc?

Thank you so much for your constant help.

Okay, thanks for that.

1,So immigration and the border guards only care about the cancelation of the extension of stay?

2,So I only have to visit the immigration and then leave Thailand without going to the labour office first?

3,I could cancel the WP at a later date and that would be okay?

Thank you.

I was referring to immigration at the border.

You should not need proof that your work permit has been canceled when you cancel your extension.
