JOC
Good caught, now start at the top and work your way down. No doubt there are a lot more like him in the RTP. Then the Army. Too many super rich General. "No doubt there are a lot more like him in the RTP" For starters have a look a the guy, who ordered this crackdown!! When you have connected the dots, please report back!!
Dogmatix
Akkharawut was cooperative and gave useful information to police, he said. Perhaps he was too cooperative and fingered more police generals than he was asked to before taking the balcony fall.
Briggsy
The only thing that is different here is that this is a Chinese Communist Party-style purge as opposed to the normal Thai high level power shift where snouts are just pushed out of the trough for a few years. The army has to ensure that it retains its access to power and its access to national revenues before both stepping aside (election - coup - election - coup cycle) and before any event which involves a power shift.
SoFarAndNear
This is probably where the seized drug money in the last years finaly end up. In the "RTP" Lt. General's extra bedrooms.
Pi Sek
Lets be clear - this is not a 'clean-up', but a 'clean-out' of political opponents. Clean up, clean out, clean down, clean in... I don't really care, as long as it's clean.

siampolee
Yesterday's search reportedly turned up cash in both Thai and US banknotes amounting to billions of baht, as well as gold bars, rare Buddha images and numerous amulets along with a large number of land title deeds. To my mind the most interesting question is if that is what this character had stashed away at home how much was the original sum prior to his share. Methinks it is not a purge of political opponents it is a purge of corrupt officials. The attempted diversion of the matter in question and its motives by certain posters leads one to assume that certain parties may be themselves feeling a little less secure regarding perhaps their position and wealth and their contacts business and politically as well as socially or even family wise?
siampolee
As for the death of Pol Colonel Akkharawut Limrat, Prawut said a certificate issued by coroners on Friday said he suffered a broken spine at chest level, which was caused by a fall. Akkharawut, transferred from a top position along with Pongpat, had attempted suicide on three occasions after his transfer, he said.Akkharawut was cooperative and gave useful information to police, he said. Ah. Did he fall or was he pushed, or perhaps he thought he was Peter Pan?
umbanda
How good would it be if all the corrupt thai's amassing huge wealth was caught stripped of all their assets and given hard labour, and the money used to help the poor. Agree totally....but...that is called "socialism" and too many people doesn't like that, and too many people doesn't believe that crimes and corruption is happening in "capitalist" countries since "democracy" and "free market" was invented...
Gonzo the Face
Reading thru all he opinions of he various posters is very interesting. But to me one thing is missing. Fact: the man apparently loved physical money [keep some on hand in case he had to pay the paperboy] Fact: In the form of cash it would take up quite a space , as has been pointed out With this much paper money, Thai Baht & US Dollars, what kind of fire insurance did he have and what does he [in case of fire] tell the insurance company? Maybe a smart man would have taken the vast majority of it , buy gold and melt it down into one large ingot, too large for thieves to carry out. What kind of fire insurance do you have? Are you sure you are protected?

Briggsy
I have heard these stories often of politicians, army top brass and top police keeping huge amounts of cash in their homes and the tale/myth/truth? that the Royal Mint has to factor this in when planning a new series of 1000 Baht bank notes. inzman
What gets me is that this isn't the first guy caught with a warehouse full of cash. So, I assume there are more guys like this. This country has untold wealth if they can pry it out of the top officials. Corruption is even worse than anyone can imagine. It's really pulling the country down. Thailand could really use the money if they are serious about stopping corruption .

Do you really think, this highranking policeofficer collected more than 1 billion baht to supplement his poor salary?? NO!! The reason is called greed!! And his believe in being untouchable!! Everytime you pay 200 baht at the roadside to some lowranking officer, at least 150 baht goes up the foodchain!!
wilcopops
Firstly this smacks of a political event to me. secondly one fears that having got one corrupt policeman they will try to claim they have cleaned up the whole problem....Leaving more "friendly" corrupt officials to continue unscathed.

"or law enforcement system" What the whole idea of bringing this topic to the posters, if we are not allowed to comment on it?? Since this topic is about a law enforcement officer allegedly in possession of more than 1 billion baht, I guess we can expect some posts to be on the negative side!! All within the framework of common sense ofcourse!!

The low ranking officer only gets a small percentage of the bribe, so it wouldn't be too expensive to raise their salaries to a point where bribe taking was no longer necessary to survive. Couple that with draconian punishments for accepting (and offering) bribes and things would get much better.

HughJass
Hats of the the powers that be on this one. Lets hope this case is pursued properly and appropriate custodial sentences dished out. Its a tiny tip of a huge iceberg, but its a start. I expect these guys have stepped on the wrong toes, or pinned their flags on the wrong ship. Hopefully its a sign of things to come, not just a purge of a few wrongly aligned ones. It's a purge of those that have the wrong political affiliations, friends or paymasters, nothing more, nothing less and it won't go any deeper than that. absolutely correct
wilcopops
There are already a couple of posts that are claiming this as evidence of "Thaksin corruption" -- the truth is that corruption pervades ALL sides of Thai politics and authority so it is illogical to draw the inference that this is evidence that one side of politics is more corrupt than the other. it would be more logical to suggest that any corruption investigation is likely to turn up evidence regardless of who they target so it is actually more informative to look at who the anti-corruption people are targeting.
