NACC’s panel to start probing the assets of Pol Lt-Gen Pongpat

BANGKOK: -- The assets examination subcommittee of the National Anti-Corruption Commission has started to get a thorough examination of the assets of former Central Investigation Bureau commissioner Pol Lt-Gen Pongpat Chayapan and two senior police officers.

Mr Worawit Sukbun, deputy secretary-general of the NACC, said on Friday that the reexamination of the declared assets of Pol Lt-Gen Pongpat, Pol Maj-Gen Boonsueb Praithoen, former commander of the Marine Police, and Pol Maj-Gen Chaithat Boonkham, former commander of the Crime Suppression Division was a followup of the decision of the NACC.

He said that the subcommittee would dig deeper into the assets of the three officers to trace their origins.

Meanwhile, Pol Lt-Gen Prawuth Thavornsiri, spokesman of the Royal Police Office, said that there was still no progress in the police attempt to track down two most wanted fugitives, Mr Nopporn Suppapipat, a pioneer in wind energy and Mr Sahachai Jiensermsin or Sia Jo, the alleged major oil smuggler in the Deep South who paid bribes to a large number of officials in the region, including Pol Lt-Gen Pongpat’s gang.

ALL police force officers, regardless of rank, and their families should have their assets thoroughly investigated.

Pol Lt-Gen Pongpat's gang? How big is this gang? Transparency would help in such a big corruption case.

I would think this is hard to track if a pile of money goes from one criminals safe to the other criminals safe.

For starters they could look into the unusual wealth of the present Chief of National Police Mr Somyot!!

And when they have finished with the police, they should start with the army!!

I would think this is hard to track if a pile of money goes from one criminals safe to the other criminals safe.

Like in, when the money is transferred from the accused officer to the investigating officer??

No wonder, we have never seen a picture of the confiscated cash in the press!!

Pretty sure there is not enough labor or materials to build that many prisons. The government would have to turn Kao Tao back into a penal colony just for the crooked Major and above officers in the RTP.

Wonder how small a percentage of the confiscated assets in this case are going to end up in the state coffers??

Don't care about Thailands improved corruption rating. Nonsense!! This have to be one of most corrupt countries in the world!!

From the trafficcop to the chief of police. From the conscript to the general!! Different levels, but they are all in on it!!

Why do the Thai police have such a corrupt image? Surely this is due to that they police civillians so recieve lots of negative accusations from the public and media. I would say out of all the armed forces the police are the easiest to critize.

The National Anti Corruption Commitee need to make clear that it is non biased towards investigating the police and that corruption also occurs in other government services.

Lets change things. Like Burma lets see who the most honest copper is. They had an article on the traffic cop there that everybody loved. They brought him food, shook his hand and gave him money. He went away for 4 days to receive an award and the traffic turned to chaos. Nominations Please!!

Here is a nice example concerning corruption from Vietnam for Thailand to follow.

can you imagine the sort of network behind the more lucrative narcotics business which always seems to hit a brick wall when it comes to further investigations up the line from a huge haul

anyway surely they have enough on this guy to have him arrested and extradited from Canada - plenty of fugitives going the other direction of late

probably for a few reasons

1. we have all experienced it in one way or another

2. The promotion system which is not based on merit or passing exams and boards, this very system encourages police to extort money and get involved in crime in order to advance their careers - which ultimately means that those in high ranks are the most corrupt

3. Very low pay

Those NACC must be rubbing they're hand in glee by now standing in front this free for all buffet

and smorgasbord of stuff they can manipulate as they see fit...

I wonder now how many artefacts will be declared as "fakes" and end up being sold or disposed

off cheaply ( to inside people of course) only that they're not fakes....

Once again, the NACC is doing an investigation on demand. Who is to investigate the NACC for their selective investigation.
