BANGKOK: -- A total of 105 people, many of them politicians and rich businessmen, own more than 100,000 rai of Sor Por Kor (land reform) land in 12 provinces, according to the findings of the Office of Land Reform for Agriculture.

Mr Veerachai Narkviboonwong, secretary-general of the OLRA, said over the weekend that officials from his omilyffice had conducted a survey of five million rai of Sor Por Kor land throughout the country in order that the land will be reallocated to the needy and landless farmers in line with the government’s land policy.

After one month of survey of the land in 12 provinces, it was discovered that up to 110,000 rai of land have fallen into the hands of just 105 individuals, many of them politicians, plantation owners and rich businessmen.

The followings are the breakup of Sor Por Kor land occupation by these individuals: 14,000 rai in northern provinces occupied by 54 individuals; 9,800 rai in northeastern provinces occupied by 17 individuals; 36,000 rai in the central provinces occupied by 122 individuals and 52,000 rai in southern provinces occupied by 11 individuals.

Informed sources said that in Sa Kaew province, a company of a political family has occupied up to 2,500 rai of land whereas in Krabi province, 11 people occupy 52,000 rai of land.

Mr Veerachai admitted that his office alone was helpless to take back the land. A full report of the land survey will soon be submitted to Agriculture Minister Pittipong Pungbun na Ayudhya so that it can be forwarded to the National Land Policy Committee headed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha for consideration.

Never gonna happen..

They might re allocate some land bought by average Joe, but the big guns will keep everything..

Give them all amnesty and bring taksin back with a clean slate then we can watch it al unfold again :)

If what is alledged in the article is true and Prayith and Co. do nada then it will clearly show nothing will ever change .. stuck on groundhog day again

Love Thai maths!!

The headline: "105 people..........................."

And then the breakup : 54+17+122+11= 105??

Hope they are better at measuring land than maths!!

Hope they are better at measuring land than maths!!

The total is actually 166,300 rai. So the answer is no to better measuring. I think even that is too low a figure if one contemplates who might own this land?

Spotted that as well, but have been told where I work that calculations in Thai maths are done differently.

Perhaps the same individuals own SPL-land in more-than one area ?

So that there is an element of double-counting involved.

Maybe The Office for Land Reform and Agriculture does not have the power to solve this problem, but fortunately for the Thai public, general Prayuth has all the power needed, and since the land and those involved have already been identified, all it takes is a simple order from general Prayuth, and all the land can be back in the hands of the government in a day or 2. Whatever has been invested in the land by those thieving "business men" should be considered lost to them and be declared government property. It would all be quite simple, and would teach a lesson to others, just like the potential demolishion of the high rise on soi Ruamrudee in Bangkok.

Should the 105 people protest the ruling, general Prayuth can always suggest a thorough investigation into their general wealth and tax payments, in combination with an investigation into how they managed to obtain the land in question. I am sure such an investigation would give reason for both confiscation of even more ill gotten assets as well as fines and potential jail time, and would therefore likely silence any protest.

A great opportunity for the "new" government to demonstrate just how serious they are about making things "right" in Thailand.

I hope everyone is watching and paying attention.

People need to let it be known that they are looking.

A good media would be very helpful !

I doubt we will see any media follow up of this story....just like other examples of outright corruption it will fade from the pages of the newspapers....remember Supoj from the transportation dept a couple of years ago....had a billion baht in cash in his home and a fleet of expensive cars and a compound in central Bangkok on a salary of 30000 a month....heard nothing about him ever since.

Correct, but a possibility is that some names are the same in different provinces, which however should have been mentioned for mathematical reasons...whistling.gif

Edit, could also be it...wink.png

Love farang reading comprehension!!

Some of the 105 individuals occupy land in different provinces. Obvious from the article. E.g Mr X is one of the 54 in province A, and he is also one of the 17 in province B.

That's how these "businessmen" become rich, by stealing from the public. Now that they are exposed, let them face the consequences and ruin them.

I think you will find that under the terms of the Sor Por Kor, the poor farmers/landless could use the land as collateral. I suspect that the rich businessmen and politicians gained the land through loan defaults. If this is the case then it is going to be a huge legal task to get the land back and may not be possible at all. The blame for this situation lies fairly and squarely on poor legislation and/or corrupt legislation.

This article may offer some insite http://www.nationmultimedia.com/home/Sor-Por-Kor-land-cant-be-bought-70375.html
