Australia worst performer on climate change - report

(BBC) Australia was the worst performing industrial country in terms of climate change in 2014, a new report has said.

The report by two non-government organisations said the poor ranking was due in part to policy changes made by the current coalition government.

The Climate Change Performance Index ranks emissions and climate policies of the 58 highest CO2 emitters worldwide.

It ranked Denmark as the best performing nation, followed by Sweden and the UK.

Saudi Arabia ranked last on the index.

Depends what you mean by 'worst'.

We know what the BBC thinks is 'worst', and since the authors of the report are the Climate Action Network and GermanWatch.org, it's hardly difficult to figure out what they think is 'worst'.

'Worst', in their view, includes not throwing good money after bad by donating to UN slush funds that achieve nothing but feed a few egos.

But since the new Abbott government refuses to support the UN gravy train, expect the Green Blob to flood the airwaves wailing that Australia is committing unforgivable social crimes like “falling out of step”, “failing to match international action” and being “mean”.

Whatever one's shade of politics, be it Green or Abbott's slightly charred one, there is absolutely no doubt that carbon levels around the world are at their highest in many hundreds of thousands of years.

To produce the power/energy needed for the global population expected in the next 50 years, a new coal powered power station needs to be built every day!

Even the largest countries such as the USA and China have now reached agreement on reducing carbon levels.

People are complaining about the wild and severe weather, yet still deny climate change.

The bad news is that the Earth is NOT flat and the industry-led deniers will have to learn the hard way, that we are not helping the planet or ourselves in the long run.

What the Chinese actually agreed to was to cap their CO2 emissions by 2030. In other words, they are free to keep increasing their CO2 emissions for the next 15 years.

That hardly qualifies as an "agreement on reducing carbon levels.".

The Chinese aren't stupid -- unlike many Western countries infected by the Green Blob.

Thanks for posting that. It is sad that only now it is making the news. A close friend of mine was in western QLD a couple of years back going around and trying to help Farmers consolidate and not loose their land. We owe him dearly for this help, even though it was his profession. Unfortunately, after reading this, it may have all been in vain.

I would go home in a heartbeat and work alongside any Farmer that was on the edge to help out, and keep his land...and you know when i say it I will do it....I do it..

Forget the fact that the world's major shipping lines are saving millions of dollars in fuel by using the now ice-free routes of the arctic ocean.

Forget the fact that whole villages in the European Alps are being moved to avoid avalanches and flooding from melting snows.

Forget the fact that warmer ocean temperatures are acidifying the oceans and killing the coral of the Great Barrier Reef (That's OK because Rabbit and Jockey have OK'd a massive port expansion with the sludge going to coat the bleached, dying coral with a lovely layer of red mud which tourists from around the world will flock to see (he must have been talking to the Thai tourism minister at APEC for that one)

Even sillier, Oz power stations burn lower grade coal (higher ash content) and export the premium stuff. And at the same time, we build hugely expensive solar power stations, which produce very little electricity SOME of the time, and NONE when demand is highest.

Imagine if our grandparents had left the place in such a mess, and no plans to clean it up.

I was watching a documentary about deep sea research the other day. There are underwater volcanoes down there continually spewing out huge amounts of molten lava that to what,s left of my mind must have a far greater effect on sea temperatures than mankind can come up with. Maybe someone could organize one day a month when everyone left their refrigerator door open

Allegedly more - I can't say I've seen any real data to back this up. By real data I mean scientific evidence, not just numbers spewed from leftie/greenie aligned organisations.

Even if Ozzies produced more per head of population the overall impact is negligible on the global CO2 count.

It is the cumulative gross world output that may have an effect or are you indicating the air in Oz has a higher level of CO2 than the air in other countries?

Then of course someone actually has to prove the level of CO2 impact, due to human behaviour, on the climate.

No-one has yet.

Remember back in the 1970's (if you are old/educated or experienced enough) - it was called Global Warming and all sorts of dire things were predicted to happen.

When they didn't happen it was changed to Climate Change to account for the colder weather being experienced in many parts - quite the opposite to Global Warming. The excuse lately for the non correlation between CO2 and temperature was that the heat is being held in deep oceans.

Another myth that has been busted.

This is how religions start, including the current "Green" religion. Someone makes a statement to simple people that cannot be disproved.

When the statement appears to be wrong due to changed circumstance - it is changed to another statement that cannot be disproved, and so on and so on, until the original statement is forgotten and the statement maker achieves high status among the simpletons due to his/her apparent almost mystical knowledge.

From then on the simpletons believe anything the statement maker says. And there are many simpletons in the western world who will believe anything they see on the television from where most of their information derives.

Look up an article by Patrick Moore published recently and read how he explains how we currently have a very low level of CO2 in the atmosphere at present compared to the history of the world. And that we could have a level many, many times higher with no difference to the planet as we had in the past.

By the way the dredged spoil from the new port you mentioned is going to be disposed of on land now, not dumped in the sea a 100 kilometres from the Reef as per the original plan, where it would have had no effect on the Reef.

No doubt a rare insect, that nobody has heard of or even cares about, will be conveniently found in the proposed landfill site in an effort to thwart the carefully planned and managed development, thus delaying development, increasing costs and costing jobs. And slowly but surely killing the Oz economy.

Have you ever seen satellite photos of North Queensland in the wet season with the rivers in full flood. Billions of tons of material is washed out to sea, as has been the case for millennia. The Reef formed during these times and continues to thrive regardless.

The agenda here has nothing to do with the Reef but all to do with the loony left/green alliance to stop any and all development at all cost and by any means.

Perhaps those leftie/greenies should hand back a portion of their government hand outs paid for by industry taxes in a show of solidarity and protest of accepting blood money. And possibly get a job.

Yeah right - that won't happen.

Solar activity, Milankovic cycles, cosmic rays, aerosols, the Earth's albedo. The AMO, the PDO, UHI, CFC, ENSO, and NOx. Water vapour, volcanoes, stadium waves, soil emissions, the ozone layer, methane, clouds, earth's orbit, the Sun's output, the Earth's core, and soot.

And CO2.
