Nuttawut calls on Prayut to invoke charter to grant amnesty

BANGKOK: -- Red-shirt leader Nuttawut Saikuar Friday called on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha to invoke Article 44 of the interim constitution to grant amnesty to demonstrators during the political turmoil.

Nuttawut posted on his Facebook wall that the amnesty would bring about reconciliation in the country.

He expressed confidence that the amnesty for the people of all groups, who were not protest leaders would not meet opposition from anyone because all sides seemed to agree with the principle.

This amnesty bill, was the one that brought the previous government down.

I'm not going to debate if it was right or wrong, I will leave t to the Thai people.

I totally agree. In "Lack of Sanctions" (LOS) where are consequences ever - perhaps occasionally to poor folks - given? I believe most Thais ("freemen") feel/believe they can do ANYTHING they wish w/out consequences or even being verbally admonished. I am delighted my culture taught me so many valuable/moral/ethical lessons and standards.

Amnesty for peaceful protesters? Why would they need it? The ones who require amnesty are the ones who face criminal charges. Why should they get it? Nattawut told those people not too worry, he told them that he would take responsibility. If he is an honorable man, a man of his word, he should offer to stand in their place, in a court of law.

How about Nuttawat asking that the courts revoke his bail and get on with hearing the multiple charges against him.

He could then ask the NACC to investigate Nuttawut transport's role in the rice pledging scheme and ask how that company got contracts to move rice to unspecified destinations.

After all he no longer has parliamentary immunity.

After killing out the first shoots of a possible democracy (2009-2010), the red terrorists need an amnesty to escape their deserved punishment...

Let's have 'special' Courts instead to serve them hard, non-conniving (opposite to the Criminal and Appeal Courts with all their Shins' creatures in place), Justice, together with all others, Yellow, Blue, etc. who would have committed the same ugly crimes, no mercy, for any!

For Thailand to be able(!) to make its first ever(!) steps towards a true democracy, the country is in high need of, new, truly, representative, popular movements, not 'compromitted' with any present political party, wealthy clan or corrupt association, this goes as well for the N, N-E, E, where nothing constructive for the nation can be reasonably expected from red-shirts/UDD (which negated several opportunities to reform themselves in that direction, far away from the Shins' dominance and the rancid remnants of the communist party cum some egotripping clowns), as it is also true for S and Central, where Yellow affiliated moneymakers and local 'barons' are still running the show, in a very selfish way.

The only other way I'd see, to escape a long and bloody clash which must be avoided, would be (con)federalism with four regions having extended autonomy, next to a strong, intangible, federal authority, manned by (rotating!) regional 'delegates'...

P.S.: and I would rather wish that Nut-tawut... 'a long and interesting life' (the Chinese way), as I hope he has used up most of his luck...

It's not only about the quality of the violence comitted but about the quantity.

if you count the bodies, the the majority came from the army.

but even at that, your 90% red shirt number is just silly and unobjective. Even this year there were clashes with yellow shirts where they were laced with navy personnel. And yet people here only ever talk about MiB.

violence is violence and it's wrong whether it is used by one political/religious/ethnic group against another or the government against its own citizens.

I personally do not agree with any of the amnesty proposals, but I can understand why some in Thailand want the amnesty for the normal protesters (not the protest / government leaders).

- period?

- what is a protester?

- what is a protest leader?

- what about protesters who are politicians, guards, 'elite', etc.?

- how will amnesty for some be reconciled with fairness to all?

- With some having doubts on the Interim Constitution why use it for 'amnesty'

- Will an amnesty based on an Interim Constitution be valid under the constitution in the making?

- What are the legal consequences?
