guardian
This Bangkok Post article is a letter from a reader: SMS from the PC Here is a tough nut to crack (find): applications/services for sending free, no-hassle SMS from my computer to all over the world. They are out there, alas, hard to find a good one that doesn't hijack your phone number or ask for endless information. PAUL MAZOR Database replies: Wanda Sloan replies: There is certainly no utility which will send SMS to all computers, everywhere. I state this categorically, because I have tried several. Along the way, I have found there are both technical and financial reasons for this. There is no standard at any level. I have had the best results in sending SMS from a computer by going to the web site of the company to which the telephone owner belongs - AIS and Dtac, for example, and T-Mobile and Cingular in America, and so on. But even this is far from wonderful; just for starters the Thai providers seem to delight in changing their SMS page URLs. And of course if Thai providers allow SMS from computers, they miss collecting the one or three or five baht they would get if you sent it on your phone. In the US, on the other hand, there may be restrictions, because in that strange country the person receiving the message pays, not the one sending it. Having an AIS connection, I went to their website and tried finding a link from where to send these FREE SMSs but could not find any. Any other member tried? lomatopo
A long time ago anyone could send an SMS to a AIS/One-2-Call subscriber via a website interface. I don't think this is still possible? You can register as a user and then get access to all sorts of features, including the ability to send SMSes (but you will be charged). http://www.one-2-call.com/One2Call/otc/e/index.jsp http://www.mobilelife.co.th/mobilelife/th/index.jsp10 http://www.one-2-call.com/One2Call/club/t/index.jsp I use Yahoo! Messenger (with voice, v. 7,0,2,120) to send free SMSes to dTAC and One-2-Call subscribers. (Actions, Send text message, Other contact, +66 n nnn nnnn, no leading zero). If the recipient replies it shows up in Yahoo! Messenger. There are paid services, I use telemessage, which allows me to send SMSes anywhere from Outlook as an email, and they appear to have been sent from my phone, so the recipient can reply.
