Over 80% of Thais of 25-34 ages have smart phones

BANGKOK: -- Thailand is the country where more than 80% of population aged 25-34 own smartphones, a survey by IPG Mediabrands revealed.

The leading global media holding company’s finding was from its online survey from May-July with a sample size of 10,000 across 19 countries, of whom 500 respondents were in Thailand.

The survey focused on people with ages of 25-34 which it called “millennials” (ages 18-34) because of the importance of their spending behaviour. This group is said to have high-potential purchasing power next year.

These potential buyers were born and raised under a series of financial crises along with the technological revolution in the past decades, so the long recession had a profound impact on them.

Of the Thai participants, 50 per cent said they had their income reduced, while the global figure was 36 per cent.

About 79 per cent of the Thais confessed that they were worried about their personal financial situation, while the global average was lower at 72 per cent. About 29 per cent of Thai participants feared losing their jobs.

Although millennials appear to be more cautious about spending, they are smart consumers, as they appreciate spending money for products and brands that help improve their image and reflect their high social status.

This kind of consumer is able to switch brands and adapt to new products and technology. Brands should treat them with respect and as equals. Products and services should give them truth and authenticity.

Millennials are always connected with online communications to connect and share their stories.

According to the survey, 81 per cent of Thais own smartphones, which was higher than the global average of 45 per cent.

Technology has empowered millennials in their relationships.

Of Thai participants, 95 per cent said they used social media every day.

Today 33 million Thais spent 90 minutes per day on various platform of social media (300% growth), breaking down to 28 million on Facebook (35% growth), 1,600 million views of Top Channel on YouTube ( 270% growth).

Thai viewers of You Tube ranked second in Asia Pacific while Thai users of Instagram grew 240% to 1.5 users.

It said 64% of Thais use smartphone in social media communications.

Of the total 67 million Thai population, 27 million are Internet users, 28 million use social medias, 34.6 million use smart phones, and 4.7 million use tablets.

IPG Mediabrands is the global media holding company of Interpublic, and a full-service media network based upon a “Pay-for-Performance” model.

The company manages and invests $36 billion in global media on the behalf of its clients, employs over 8,500 diverse marketing communication specialists worldwide and operates businesses in more than 127 countries.

It's bad in Thailand, for sure. They aren't as bad as the UK though (which surprised me). On my return, I've had to do the 'I-Phone shuffle' several times. That's where you have to 'shuffle left, then right' on the pavement as the person walking towards you is playing on their phone, oblivious to the fact that other people are having to dodge him until he (hopefully) walks into a lampost.

Seriously, I'm expecting to hear of a huge amount of lampost related injuries while walking over the next few years worldwide.

However, it's good that most Thais are hooked up to the net. At least they can check out all the fairy stories they've had shoved down their throats now. Can only be a good thing and I hope the internet in Thailand survives, but I'm not sure it will. If they ever did ban facebook or line in Thailand there would be riots like never before.

iPhone has I message.... no need of line.

And over 95% of Thais under the age of 19 have smart phones too.

Production and services drop drastically as Phone usage increases

Must be money in Thailand!!!

But, does it make them smart?

they only need to appear smart to succeed in thai society

I was a cast member filming part of a TV commercial in a private, upscale elementary school in Thong Lo, kids ages 6 to 10. Just about every kid I saw had an I-Phone. You could tell the disadvantaged kids; they only had 4's, but the majority had 5's and they were totally casual about it..no big deal. One teacher explained that she texts their homework assignments and current grade scores to both them and their parents at the end of every day. Man!! Am I ever glad we didn't have those things when I was a kid and hiding my report card every term!

I only have a phone that makes phone calls, can a smart phone do that?

...and apparantly, they aren't...coffee1.gif

I hear you, but I imagine these kids have probably hacked the teacher's network and can adjust their scores automatically. tongue.png

But, does it make them smart?

Agreed,

Kind of an oxymoron isn't it? No different here in the U.S.

They need to think they are developing and getting a 'smart' phone is simply another way of doing so.

some buy phone, some buy elite card to feel smart and vip.

Must be money in Thailand!!!

Most of this % have to live in rural areas, but no crash hats---alcohol drinkers---un serviced M/Cycles--Unclean houses and gardens---spend vast amounts on whitening creams---nose jobs-- have showers in a tin shed outside---freestyle lives with no home discipline --- OF course there are a % than do not fall into this mode BUT MOST DO------then they cry NO HAB.

Too bad the headline did not read: Over 80% have a smart brain.

I only have a phone that makes phone calls, can a smart phone do that?

If you have a smart phone, and download LINE free calls ap

local and international are free. Send photos and text any time any place--as long as your friend has also downloaded. ON Wi Fi. Does your PHONE give you free calls. if it doesn't then it's not smart LOL.

Products and brands that help improve their image. Lololololol. It's amusing coz they really believe that it will improve anything.

I only have a phone that makes phone calls, can a smart phone do that?

Love that!

I also have a phone that simply goes 'ring ring' and cost 900 baht 6 years ago. Whether it's a 1/2/3 or 4 is not clear.

You and I are clearly missing out! laugh.png

I'd bet that the Vast Majority have never read about the Brain Cancer connection from phones and WiFi!!!

That's true Ginjag but there is another side to this, without being argumentative.

I have a fixed landline and can dial my daughter in the UK for 1 baht a minute. Now, I have no idea what a top of the range smartphone costs but using a ball park figure of 8000 baht I have done some sums. Firstly deduct my line rental of 1000 for a year, that leaves 7000. This equates to 116 hours of 1 baht/min phone calls - or nearly 5 days.

I guess it's an age thing but I find it much more civilised to sit in an armchair with a real phone when having a social conversation, rather than walking around in circles kicking the ground and bumping into things, as I see many people doing.

I guess I can make emergency calls on my cheap mobile if I'm not at home. As for taking pictures, I have a camera which can plug into the computer and send pics.

I suppose the technological life of apps and gizmo's is passing me by !!

This statistic is the primary reason the elites have lost control of the previously enslaved masses - the truth cannot be hidden anymore. Thanks to their phones, there is not too many Thais who don't know exactly what the back story to the recent arrests of high ranking police officers is.

I wonder if this would also be true

"Over 80 percent of Thais age 25-34 have phones smarter than themselves"

soon we will all watch movies with our phone. or see and talk to friends in a different ways.

Samsung has recently launched a new model called gear vr (virtual reality) but you need a note 4 to make it works. . Apple is working on their system.

theses phones will soon become smarter than smart.
