Warrants for police over links to online gambling
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Arrest warrants have been issued for three suspects, including two police, in connection with an online gambling organisation allegedly run by an Indian businessman with ties to ousted crime-buster Lt General Pongpat Chayaphan.

Pongpat, former commissioner of the Central Investigation Bureau, and his then deputy Pol Maj-General Kowit Wongrungroj were charged on Saturday for their alleged roles in the gambling operation run by Abubakar bin Sulaiman, National Police spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri said yesterday.

Pongpat and Kowit are in custody at the Bangkok Remand Prison.

The Abubakar operation reaped around Bt100 million from Thai punters through online betting, and police have found that Pongpat and Kowit had benefited from it, he said.

The three other suspects were identified as Pol Colonel Worraphoj Pheutphol, Pol Lt-Colonel Songsak Khunsri and Withoon Trakarnphruek.

Pongpat reportedly led police in 2009 to arrest an Indian businessman in 2009 accused of involvement in an online gambling organisation with turnover of billions of baht.

Pongpat, then commander of the Crime Suppression Division, arrested property developer Karan Singh Thakral at a luxury condominium on Thong Lor Soi 3. Thakral was then charged with hosting Internet football gambling.

Pongpat, speaking in a press interview, said Thakral, 39, was part of the online gambling network of Abubakar bin Sulaiman.

The network's turnover is alleged to be more than Bt3.2 billion, with police suspecting that the enterprise was also involved in more unspecified illicit businesses.

So perhaps the comments concerning legitimacy of on line gambling, trading business activities and digital pikeys were a lot nearer the truth than people realized.

The matter it seems reaches into the highest echelon of Thai and it would seem also Indian society here not just the lower levels of the other locally based foreign characters here..

Perhaps those who were extolling the virtues of the digital pikey way of life would be wise to take cover as they would be an easy target for those who seek them. The big money boys have been nicked, so what chance for the small fry?.

Just lovely!! Thailand finest arrest a criminal running illegal gambling, just to take over the business themselves!!

Now with Pongpat out of the way, wonder who is in charge of the gambling today?? A very succesful SET-investor??

The devil you do the devil you don't , as much as I like freedom of expression gambling has become too easy on the Net, responsible gambling if you can control your actions is a great thing , not everyone is that way inclined , Thai's are regarded as mad gamblers , from what I have seen no more than any other race, however anyone on low wages it is a easy way to increase or decrease your pay packet , the law in Thailand says no gambling , (lotto is a form of gambling sponsored by the state) , however the law must be seen to be upheld and this includes police officers, I sympathise with anyone working in Thailand your wages are such Sh!!t that a little extra if you can get it , is welcome. coffee1.gif

It seems Pongpat is linked to all of Thailand's crime syndicates. The ones getting caught, that is.

Also known as a purge!!

All part of a much bigger picture....................coffee1.gif

The military and junta is purging Thailand of infidels in preparation for D-Day which will happen sooner that later. Dont let the rhetoric fool you. The military and junta are consolidating every part of Thai society in anticipation of such day. Who knows when it will happen or what the day actually is? For sure the Thai citizen does not.

Isn't online gambling rigged anyway? Who would want to play?

Multiple farangs in Thailand gamble on line usually by playing poker in what is known as "grinds" to support their living expenses, they claim to be internet entrepreneurs/business people, typically on tourist or Ed visa's

Selectively. Just read between the lines (international press, local friends).

Not sure what you mean by "selectively".

It's widely reported in the Thai press about his LM related issues. But it's all the criminal issues that seem to be being linked back to Pongpat.

It seems that Pongpat pushed the wrong buttons and his whole network is being taken down ... leaving more for the other networks, of course.

Glad to see a long overdue house cleaning. The big rocks are being lifted and the slimy creatures living beneath, are running for cover.

Only problem is that the rocks are being lifted by equally slimy creatures!!

The yellow variety!!

With the police's poor wages, it is no wonder that most are looking for side incomes ...

Actually, they are paid inline with local salaries. I don't subscribe to this police are underpaid line. The grunts on the street, maybe, but go up and it is decently paid; scams notwithstanding. Try to avoid repeating what you read on this site. ;)
