PHUKET: -- The year turned over with two more violent shootings – in Phuket Town and Patong -- and a suicide attempt in the island’s premier party town late last night, early this morning.

The first shooting incident, which resulted in a fatality, occurred on Naresorn Rd, in front of the Finance Ministry’s "government center" office in the Talad Yai sub district, near the junction with Trang Rd, which forms a border with Rassada sub-district.

Phuket police were alerted to the shooting at about 11.15pm and dispatched officers to the scene, a bend in the road where they found a fallen Suzuki Smash motorbike next to a pool of blood.

Lying in a pool of blood nearby was the lifeless corpse of the victim, an 18-year-old who was identified only as “News” of Rassada. The body had one “huge bullet wound”, estimated to be 3 inches in diameter, on its upper right torso.

Police removed a spent bullet from the wound, which reportedly already had white maggots formed and feeding. The body was transported to Wachira Hospital, and police proceeded to question an eye-witness, a friend who had been riding pillion of the victim’s bike.

The witness said that prior to the shooting, he and the victim had been chased down by a gang of three bikes (brand and make unknown), each with a person riding pillion, comprising six persons in total.

The chase started in the area of Phuket municipality offices, and continued along Naresorn Rd.

Near the governor’s house, one of the assailants cocked a gun and shot at the fleeing motorbike, but the shot missed its target and hit the victim’s motorbike. The chase continued on to the site of the final, fatal shot.

At that point the victim’s passenger said he managed to run away and hide in tall grass nearby until help arrived, while the gang of bikes fleed the scene.

The Phuket News has been informed of a second shooting at 4am in Soi Nanai 8, Patong. The victim has been transported to Wachira hospital and is in critical condition.

The shootings are the latest in a series of incidents involving guns in Phuket in a 36 hour period (read about teen being gunned down here, and about police seizing guns at two different check points (story here).

Aside from these incidents, a foreign male was also reported to have attempted suicide by jumping off a building in Patong at 6am this morning. He is being treated at hospital.

No more details are available at the moment

Police nab the 20-year-old suspected shooter in Phang Nga this morning.

PHUKET: -- Police believe the teenage victim of a shooting in front of a convenient store in Patong early this morning was not the intended target, while details have emerged regarding a suicide that also took place at the start of the year in the island’s premier party town.

Mr Boonphrom Chupeng, 18, of Kathu, is in critical condition and being treated at Watchira Hospital after he was shot in his left jaw at around 5am this morning in front of a 7-11 convenience store on Soi Nanai 8 in Patong.

Having studied CCTV footage and spoken to eyewitnesses, police have identified and arrested the shooter, who was nabbed at Phang Nga’s Kok Kloi bus station this morning at 8am.

From initial interrogations, police believe that the suspected shooter, Mr Sakonrat Saeseu, 20, of Phuket’s Mueang district had mistaken Mr Boonphrom for someone else.

Nonetheless, police have booked the youth, seized the suspected weapon, and are waiting to process charges, which will be determined after police know whether the victim will survive or not.

Meanwhile, police have confirmed that a building leap suicide attempt in Patong early this morning was successful.

The deceased, Ms Ratiyakorn Sunarak, 23, of Sakhon Nakhon was said to have jumped off her 2nd floor building early this morning. Police were alerted of the incident at 4.40am.

After speaking with witnesses who said Ms Ratiyakorn, who had long bleach blonde hair, had fought with her boyfriend the night before.

The couple were said to live in the 2nd floor apartment room together.

Police believe that leading up to the incident, the woman was drinking beer in her room alone and angry because her boyfriend, who has not been named, could not take her out for the New Year’s countdown celebrations because he had to work.

Police are seeking the man for further questioning.

The two incidents in Patong follow another fatal shooting in Phuket Town late last night (story here), as well as the only confirmed fatal traffic accident yesterday, which involved a Mercedes Benz and motorbike and happened in the early hours of New Year’s Eve (story here).

Police report that there were a total of 18 road accidents yesterday, mostly involving drunk driving, and most of them involving Thais, the exceptions being one westerner and one Vietanamese.
