billd766
The unelected PM should help to implement HM The Kings intelligent and forward thinking sufficiency philosophy by ensuring that the rich elite give up some of their fabulous wealth to ensure that the poor have sufficient. It could equally have been said about ALL the elected governments over the past 20 or more years but you just HAD to pick on this one. Why not the Demeocrats or the PTP, the PPP or the TRT? If you believe that this government is guilty then so are ALL the previous governments who had far longer in power and still did nothing. This government has been in power for nearly 7 months. The TRT/PPP/PTP under Thaksin was in power for more than 13 years. Did you make the same complaint about them at the time? Did you make the same complaint about them at the time?" The Taksin governments were in for 13 years because the people of Thai gave him those 13 years. Duh. What's to complain about? Let me count the ways. The current Dear Leader has "been in power". Right. You couldn't write the truth which is "seized power". Another contribution from the Fascism Is Our Friend crowd.

djjamie
Since this Gen. took the power, the country moved only backwards , now he ask help to move forwards... Good intentions for the new year ? Moving it backwards? How so. Never any facts to back it up. On a stretch the best that can be mustered is "beliefs" Here are a few facts for you. The SET couldn't be stronger under the Junta? Look at the graph here. Look at Thailand inflation rate here. That is going in the right direction as well. Look at the GDP growth rate here. Thats looking pretty good as well heay. Consumer confidence has gone through the roof here. Couple that with consumer spending here that is looking very health. Business confidence is plodding along nicely here. In fact if you look at all the economic indicators they all started going down hill when the PTP tried to introduce the amnesty bill (against the majorities wishes) and unsurprising started to recover when the Junta took power. So really the country was going backwards until the 22nd of May and is now in a healing process. And after what the PTP put them through there is a hellava lot of healing to do. Well done on the most popular PM in the last decade for saving the country from imploding. Unless of course you preferred the pre 22nd of May chaos?
EnglishJohn
When Prayuth says it, I believe he means it. When Thaksin says it, I think "Slimy liar." People who think Prayuth is a step backwards for Thailand are either dumb or bitter because he has reduced the rampant corruption they enjoyed so much. I'm an educated foreigner who grew up in a real democracy and it is clear to me he represents some hope for real change - though I'm pretty sure all the snakes will make him fail. You people calling him a dictator show red-shirt double standards for what they are. Thaksin was a dictator of the worst kind. Every MP was terrified to go against him for fear of ruin. Never forget the 310:0 amnesty bill ...

Muirton
"Moving it backwards? How so. Never any facts to back it up." Au contraire, Pierre. Here is the opening sentence of an Op-Ed piece in the New York Times, January 1: Fifteen billion dollars. That’s roughly the price tag of the coup d’état to date. Well done on the most popular PM in the last decade for saving the country from imploding. Unless of course you preferred the pre 22nd of May chaos? dj, it's always risky to tie economics with politics. Although your numbers do show the impact of the PDRC protests, all of the indicators you mention are well below their levels in 2013 under the last government. when folks talk about going backwards, some of them mean, literally, in time. Back to the days before the majority of Thais had a reasonable say in their own governance. For me, we're heading back to the early eighties - at the best case. Let's hope it doesn't start to look like the 60s... another place where the country is moving backwards is the rather obvious one - human rights. The NHRC was just down-graded because they are a sham organization and this junta has exposed them as a complete farce. Of course there are also the arbitrary detentions, the full-on censorship, and the exploding number of LM cases. And I didn't even mention the 'intervention' So while it depends on your perspective, moving backwards is a perspective that many hold and which many can justify.
