BANGKOK, Jan 5 -- In an attempt to ease public worries over the deadly Ebola disease in Thailand, the Public Health Ministry said that only five persons remain under close surveillance in the kingdom at present.

Dr Wachira Pengjuntr, Deputy Permanent Secretary for Public Health, said two European engineers who travelled from Liberia and arrived in Thailand on December 24 were earlier suspected of carrying the disease as they had high fevers for two days after their arrival but said they were actually suffering severe malaria.

Both men are recovering now, said Dr Wachira, adding that so far only five persons remained under close surveillance in the country.

Ebola was spreading in three countries including Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Official statistics issued by the World Health Organisation says that some 20,000 patients worldwide suffered from Ebola at the end of 2014.

Approximately 8,000 persons have died of the disease.

It is believed that more newly recruited volunteers recently sent to areas where the disease is widespread are suffering from Ebola. (MCOT online news)
