Hedgehogs?

Does anyone know if you can buy hedgehogs in Chiang Mai, is there a pet shop or breeder someone knows of?

There was/is a Pet shop at the rear of Big C on the Superhighway,

that had some a year or two ago,but don't know if they are still there

or have any Hedgehogs (Pygmy African Hedgehogs),thats at the

shops outside the rear gate Big C.

They might have some in Pet shops,in Kamtien Plant Market,at

the rear of Tesco/Lotus on SuperHighway,I used to have 3 ,2

females and 1 male, only the male survives as they don't have

a long life span 3-5 years.

I have seen hedgehogs for sale at various so-called pet shops around Chiang Mai along with many other types of exotic animals, my guess is some being protected and endangered species.

The problem is that these animals require certain environments, specialised foods and care. Many people buy these animals because they look cute but have little or no experience of how to care for these animals causing suffering and in many cases premature deaths. Some maybe small on purchase but in the cases of lizards and turtles can grow to enormous sizes and then over a period of time the cute little green lizard transforms into Godzilla.

Hedgehogs are known to be prone to fleas, ticks and mites and may take a considerable amount of looking after to care for them properly and maintain their good health, plus are solitary animals and can fight to the death if several of them are kept together. They usually only meet up to mate (something similar to my lifestyle) They are also nocturnal animals so not much fun to be around unless the owner is a late night person.

I do know where to buy these animals but would rather not say and hopefully the sales of these species will cease and desist.

Have seen them at the shops on Arak road, on the moat inside west side of old city.

I've seen the albino versions--occasionally, as pets of young students, usually--' Men', in Thai, I believe they are called.

Hi Banagan, if you do get yourself a hedgehog, you can buy large

mealworms at an aquarium shop directly opposite the Post Office

in Khamtien market, 60 THB for quite a few,just keep them in a

small washing up type bowl with some meal and a slice of bread

but don't feed the hogs too many or all the time,they eat chicken,

pork,dog biscuits,mine also like corn,they only veg they would eat.

When we first got them we used to let them run around on the floor

at night time,but check their feet after as they seem to pick up hairs

which seem to get tightly wound around the feet which could cause

problems.
