Friend of mine did it for his six year old's UK passport, no problems experienced travelling to the UK from HKT last August.

New passport was applied for in the UK, no credit is given per se for the 12 month extension, as I recollect the new passport ran five years from its issue date.

Bear in mind that recently the turn around times for UK passports made in Thailand have been in the region of 2-4 weeks from the application date at trendy..

From the repeated asking it seems like you doubt the answer given before

Thailand accepts the extension so it should not be a problem entering the country.

Which is, of course, correct.

Just to expand on this question does getting the extension mean that you don't have to worry about transferring extension of stay stamps? I need a new passport next year but am planning to return to the UK a few months later so really don't want all the hassle about the transfer of stamps. I assume that if I extended the life of the current passport until after my final return to the UK then I wouldn't have to worry. Also does anyone know the procedure to extend?

If you get the extension there will be no need to transfer the stamps until you get a new passport.

If you apply for an extension of stay at immigration after getting the passport extension and you still have at least a year of validity on your passport you will get a the entire one year from the extension also.

There is no guarantee that the 12 month extension option will still be available next year from HMPO for UK Passports - guess it depends on what the backlog is like during the coming peak months.

Delays have been as little as 2-3 weeks from application to issue via BKK for several months now, so it's quite possible that the scheme could be stopped some time later this year.

Also as ubonjoe posted, you will only get a new extension for one year if more than one year's validity remains in your passport at the time of application (date of current permission to stay), so you would need to get the 12 month passport extension from the Embassy before you applied for your next extension from Thai immigration.

Final point - there are many countries in SE Asia that do not recognise/accept the 12 month UK passport extension, so also factor in any future travel plans you may have whilst holding said extended passport.

I called the consular services section of the UK embassy this morning to try to book an appointment to get my passport extended, and was told that they are no longer offering this service. (As of 2 weeks ago).

That was discussed in another topic. I think they stopped doing them on the 1st of April.

Extensions are not even mentioned on the embassy website any more.
