After more than a week of rumours surrounding the apparent crackdown by Netflix on users who access the service via a VPN, new figures released today reveal tens of millions of people watch Netflix from countries where the service isn’t yet officially available.

Perhaps the day isn't far off when Netflix will have a localized presence in Thailand.... perhaps..

Netflix now expects to complete its global expansion over the next two years, while staying profitable. It then intends to generate material global profits from 2017 onwards.

In a statement accompanying its latest set of results, the company says that acceleration from the (around) 50 countries it is currently present in to 200 “is largely made possible by the tremendous growth of the internet in general, including on phones, tablets and smart TVs.

We intend to stick to our core ad-free subscription model. As with our initial round of international expansion, we’ll get some things wrong and do our best to fix them quickly”.

They're already talking about China, Japan and South Korea..... of course, presumably, there's more money to be made there.

These figures would suggest that should Netflix ban users accessing the on demand internet streaming service via a VPN then it could greatly impact the company financially.

Not many companies take take a $240,000,000+ per month revenue loss. Not even Netflix.

VPN blocking? Not going to happen.

Outside of their own productions, it's all just old re-run content anyway, so the impact on the true money-making opportunity of fresh content it has is pretty minimal.

The content providers are the ones getting pissed off with them.

They could pull their content and leave Netflix screwed royally.

It would seem they are essentially saying "Either get legal in these countries so we get our share of the revenue, or get out of them".

Same problem for them.... Netflix is all old catalog content - Movies are mostly behind blu-ray/DVD release dates, and TV series are mostly all 1 whole season behind. i.e. this is content that's already had most of it's monetization, and has now shifted into the low-cost, re-run phase of it's life.

If the providers were to pull the content, they're going to lose a substantial revenue stream as well.
