Security operation a success of new policy, says Isoc
The Sunday Nation

PATTANI: -- A security operation on Friday in which three suspected insurgents were killed and three others arrested in Pattani's Ma Yor district stemmed from the success of the Thung Yang Daeng model for building peace and proactive intelligence gathering, a senior officer said yesterday.

The model encourages villagers to alert authorities about insurgent activities. Colonel Pramote Phrom-in, spokesman of the Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4 Forward Command, said one of the dead suspects was wanted for several incidents. He was identified as Runda Kumpulan Kecil commander Maruding Tahae, 31.

The incidents include the July 28, 2014 killing of four Ma Yor soldiers, the December 11, 2012 murder of two Ban Bango School teachers and the arson of six schools in Ma Yor and Thung Tang Daeng districts last year.

Pramote said the other dead suspects were Patah Lateh, 31, a militant wanted for three incidents including the September 11, 2013 attack on a police team in Thung Yang Daeng that resulted in five officers being killed, and Mahamasabri Dolloh, 27.

He said Mahamasabri had been wanted previously but was acquitted.

Of the five guns seized in Friday's operation, three were stolen from authorities during previous militant attacks including the September 2013 assault on the police team tasked with suppressing the illegal oil trade, he said. Pramote said officers tried to convince them to surrender but the men threw two grenades at officers and a gun battle erupted.

It's a ridiculous, not to say dangerous, trait but Thai officialdom just cannot keep quiet in an effort to look good.

Consequences, what consequences ? It doesn't matter if peoples' lives are put at risk, if suspects have time to empty their accounts and leg it and so on as someone has their name in the media claiming success.

Great. So they admit they were tipped off.

I bet the informants are over the moon that this is in the paper.

Why would this upset informants who are in no way identified? Informing insurgents that their movements are being reported by those they claim are "supporters" is demoralising, even if it is untrue, and a good strategic policy.

The Thais claim a drop to three killings per day is a success story in the Thai south. They must be around 10,000 deaths and countless injuries in the Thai south by now.

Why isn't it? Should they be held responsible for a situation exacerbated by previous administrations?

Speaking of "building peace," when are the next peace talks with insurgents? The Thai Mailitary had informed Malaysia several months ago that it was Malaysia's responsibility to bring the insurgents to the peace table. General Prayuth had promsied a peaceful settlement of the insurgency issue before end of 2015. Are these insurgents just not understanding General Prayuth's 12 Values that prevents them from cooperating with the military objectives?
