Work Permit without Degree

Featured Replies

Is it possible to get a work permit for someone with 10 years experience in the industry but no degree? It's for a management role, not related to education.

Yes.

Depends what the company who is employing you puts in their job description they send to the DOL, if it states a degree, then a degree the DOL will want to see before issuing the WP

No degree needed for me but had to show evidence of training and experience related to the job

No, there are various ways around it anyway. It depends on your employer (:

You do not need a degree to get a work permit unless your job description requires it.

This information dates from 2000, so take it for whatever it may still be worth:

In 1997, I and another foreigner were hired as English teachers in Bangkok. I had a university degree, so was able to get a Work Permit straight away.

He did not have a degree, but was able to get one after three years in the same job, with the same employer. At the time, he told me that there was some

provision in the rules permitting this, and there obviously must have been. In actual fact, I remember him telling me that the school applied on his behalf at somewhere

around the 2 yr. 9 month point, so that he had his Work Permit in hand on the day he completed his third year.

Like anything else, there is no guarantee that what worked for him will work for you, especially 15 yrs. later. But, probably worth having your Personnel Officer

making a phone call I think ?

A degree is needed for teaching but not for other types of work unless the job requires it.

For teaching it now also requires a teaching license or waiver.

I have had work permits with two different businesses in the entertainment industry no degree needed or none was asked for

Thanks all for the info. I have a much clearer picture now.

You don't need a degree to get a work permit.

Sure why not. though entirely depends on your employers decision. but apart from applying as teacher i guess your other qualifications matters here the most.

a teaching license / waiver is not required for working at a govt university

Yes it is possible unless it is the type of job that would obviously need a degree.

In your case, with 10 years experience it should be fine. Need to make sure that the company does not have a requirement for a degree written into contract or job description.

References showing relevant experience will probably be required and any certificates i.e diplomas related to the job will also be helpful.
