Ombudsman requests more power under new constitution to deal with public complaints

TRAT, 16 January 2015 (NNT) - Prof. Siracha Vongsarayankura, an ombudsman, revealed that his Office has submitted a proposal to the Constitution Drafting Commission (CDC) asking for greater power and authority for an ombudsman so that he can take more proactive action in dealing with public complaints in the future.

Prof. Siracha said the proposal authorizes an ombudsman to order a thirty-day cease to the implementation of any project under the legal procedure. Moreover, the office also requested authorization to prosecute any agencies which have received the complaints or suggestions from the office but do not follow the suggestion within ninety days. In the case, the agencies must report obstacles or difficulties they are encountering which result in the failure to abide by the ombudsman's suggestion. The newly proposed request aims to enhance the role of the ombudsman as the protector of the public rights.

He also revealed that there are currently fewer inquiries and investigations into complaints related to politics since many of the complaints have been revoked in accordance with the abolition of the 2007 constitution, which also resulted in the abolition of ombudsman’s authorization. The case revoked includes complaints and impeachment of Yingluck Shinawatra, a former Prime Minister.
