Yingluck to make closing statement to National Assembly in impeachment case
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Former prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra's decision to take to the House floor for a closing statement in the impeachment proceedings against her over the rice-pledging scheme is making political activist Suriyasai Katasila wonder if she has some trick up her sleeve.

Suriyasai said yesterday that during the closing statement, he believed Yingluck might try to "tie a political knot" concerning her next political move in order to pressure the National Legislative Assembly (NLA), should she be impeached.

The closing statements on the rice-pledging scheme are scheduled for January 22 with voting the next day.

Suriyasai said Yingluck had avoided answering questions before the assembly, and instead had four former Pheu Thai ministers answer the questions through a YouTube video.

The result of this tactic is probably aimed at to influence NLA members undecided on whether to vote for or against her.

"What they did was disrespectful to the NLA and an insult to the public. The people were deprived the chance of learning about the scheme since Yingluck refused to honestly answer questions in the assembly," he said.

Suriyasai said Yingluck had chosen to speak only during the opening and closing statements so that she did not have to answer questions from the assembly on those two days and insteadt would be able to read from a script.

Democrat Party's Phitsanulok MP Warong Dechgritvigrom attacked the Pheu Thai camp on his personal Facebook page for trying to distort the truth surrounding the rice-pledging scheme.

Four Pheu Thai ex-ministers related to the rice-pledging scheme - Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan, Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Warathep Rattanakorn and Yanyong Puangrat - answered on YouTube 35 questions on behalf of Yingluck, claiming they were issues the NLA had raised over the rice pledging scheme.

Warong said the politicians did not answer all 35 questions and avoided points that put the Pheu Thai camp at a disadvantage.

Warong said he believed the Pheu Thai camp "made up" some questions to distort the truth and show the NLA in a bad light because certain questions reflected favouritism.

He said he checked with the NLA and found that the assembly did not pose questions such as: "Do you know the extent of the damage in the rice-pledging scheme, that the government had to throw rice from the rice-pledging scheme into the sea?"

Meanwhile, Norrawit Lalang, Yingluk's lawyer, yesterday made a post on his personal twitter account @NorrawitSocial, defending Yingluck's move not to answer the questions herself, saying the NLA directives allowed officials concerned to answer questions on her behalf.

He said the NLA should refrain from posing questions that discredited any party or that put any side at a disadvantage. He said the NLA posed questions that allowed the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) to present the truth - but their questions for Yingluck were misleading as she was asked why she did not stop the rice-pledging scheme, even though there was corruption and damage in the scheme.

Meanwhile, a survey by Master Poll showed 60 per cent of leaders from 632 communities believed the impeachment of key politicians from the previous government could be carried out with justice and transparency. Almost 63 per cent said they were not worried that an impeachment would adversely affect the country's political atmosphere.

Agreed, it's an insult to the Thai people her not even bothering to turn up for questioning.

First they refuse to Televise the questioning, then they refuse representation as previously agreed to be allowed, then they refuse to hear actual MP's who were core members involved in the inner administration of the scheme. Now they are complaining about Facebook posts and YouTube videos. YL making a closing statement would seem to be the least of their problems, if they were in the slightest bit concerned about making this a fair, non-biased and transparent hearing.

You really know how to distort the facts. They did not refuse to televise the proceedings. The did not refuse her representation and they did hear testimonies from the people relevant to the case. As for the Facebook comment, that was done by her party when she should have gone and answered the questions herself. Not only did she refuse to answer but she has made so that none of the questions will be answered by her. Only a closing statement will be made now. My guess is that her closing statement will be something in the line of "I'm innocent and nothing was wrong with the rice scheme" or she will try to threaten or use political motivation to sway a negative decision. She had no clue what happened with the rice scheme.

You seem to be the one distorting facts:

NLA bars the broadcast of impeachment proceedings

and

Yingluck did not show up for the inquiry session and the NLA resolved not to allow her lawyers or representatives to answer the questions on her behalf.

And you my friend should read the article before you post me your links. That link clearly stated that the hearing WOULD be televized on parliament tv. They are just banning other networks from televising it.

And your other link is pointless since the NLA stated prior to this last hearing that since YL came to Tue opening hearing that she would have to appear for the questioning. Also in this article they clearly state that YL failed to give reason why she refused to go to this hearing. She has not been refused representation at all.

What absolute codswallop. Could you imagine a senate committee in the US accepting someone refusing to answer and demanding questions to be written so someone else could answer on YouTube? This whole thing has descended into a circus and the NLA with their unprofessional procedure have fed the flames. The whole thing is a joke. Maybe she will give her closing statement mute using only the Line App and a few specially designed stickers to promote the values of Pheu Thai - actually just one in that set depicting taking care of yourself and f$€%ing the country.

Not sure what codswallop is but it does not sound pleasant. Seems they made the video to get their side of the story out after being denied that at the hearing. As for the US senate hearing, your example just happened last year when the head of the IRS refused to answer any questions they gave her and pleaded 5th on her refusing to give tax exempt status to Tea party groups.

please read your mail again !

A hearing, that means questions and answers - like on a cod,

yes this is fair and transparent !

But your Puppet avoid this,

as in a hearing she can't forward any answer to Dubai and wait for response !!

I also beleave she personally didn't perform the scam ( you need skill for this which we miss on her )

But she as PM were responsible to control the rice substitution,

but she were told by Dobai, everything is fine and she just should spend

the money on her businesstrips !!

as she not did her duty as PM, she is guilty !!

Agreed, it's an insult to the Thai people her not even bothering to turn up for questioning.

She, like all her clan, couldn't give a monkey's toss for the Thai people. They are simply a resource to be exploited for Shin benefit.

Her closing statement will probably repeat what the other puppets said, be tinged with copious comments of "I innocent, I help poor farmers, I policy owner not manager"; and the usual not too subtle threats of how her supporters will react should any verdict or comments not be to her liking.

The actress will have a new script. There will be no admission of anything being wrong, her previous lies, the dire consequences for many of her lies, or any fault, responsibility or accountability whatsoever. Far too arrogant, grandiose and thick skinned for that.

The Thaksin PR/Legal spin doctors have no real defense, so can't really provide factual information. So polished lying is the only alternative.

Usual hyperbole so early in the morning. We at a stage whereby the song and dance from all sides are not important now. The stage has been set for a verdict on Friday. Whatever the verdict outcome, it will not help with the reconciliation. One side will be aggrieved. She is dispensable and doubt she will come back to politics if impeached or not. Criminal charges by Supreme Court will be a different cup of tea and will not be pleasant. This one big banana skin for Prayuth and his bring back happiness effort. His efforts are sinking fast like a quicksand unless he has other intention on his mind and that will be very very unpleasant. All said, the coup will be a disaster like 2006.

Actually here we blame just Ms. Yingluck (and maybe her brother) for a 700 billion Baht loss. Furthermore considering your arguments we may start to blame Ms. Yingluck for obstructing reconciliation by trying to position herself as innocent to avoid responsibility for 700 billion Baht loss and possible consequences.

BTW how much did the former BoT governor who defended the Baht in 1997 already pay back of the billions he was ordered to?

Why would she respect an assembly appointed by the political faction that has blocked elections and has overthrown her government?

There is no need for Ms. Yingluck to respect the assembly even though it's the legal parliament/Senate at the moment. Some have it there were even people who didn't respect her and her bank of hand picked ministers rolleyes.gif

Just karma for her little oligarchy of family and cronies respecting and adhering to no laws. What goes around comes around.

I can't even begin to imagine what insults the red-shirt hypocrites would throw at Abhisit if he did the same thing as Yingluck.

But she's innocent, and handles all this with grace and poise, and will answer all their questions absolutely. Well, that's what the red gang on here usually say.

The problem is when her Brother persuaded her to accept the nomination of PM she did not understand the responsibilities that went with the job...

As for anyone else doing time for her, it should be her Brother, but then he wont accept the punishment for his own crimes...
