Tourist Visa: Anyone here ever been required to show plane ticket or bank statement?

Featured Replies

Has anyone here from a western country (G7 - USA/UK/AUS etc ) been required to show a bank statement or round trip airline ticket when applying for a tourist visa in home country? What about in a country that neighbors Thailand? I am trying to figure out what real world docs I will need.

On the official website it says to get a tourist visa you need to show bank statements and round trip airfare ticket... but according to some past posts in reality the embasy people never ask for that. Just need the standard stuff like passport and photos.

  • If you have a visa of any type you do not need a return or onward ticket to board your flight or enter the country.

If you look at the requirements posted on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website for tourist visas it says you need tickets and financial proof. http://www.mfa.go.th/main/en/services/123/15398-Issuance-of-Visa.html

There are many embassies and consulates that do not ask for either of them though.

The only way to know what is needed is to contact the embassy or consulate directly.

None of the embassies or consulates (Cambodia and KL Malaysia may be an exception) in neighboring countries ask for tickets out or financial proof.

There are some within the region that do ask for tickets out of the country.

specifically what country are you from?

In Canada, I always have and provide a copy of my itinerary as the website says it is required. The application form asks about my financial resources and the last time I said $10,000 plus. There has never been a request for proof. My return ticket was for 5 months and I wrote a note to explain that I would be travelling to neighbouring countries and that is why I required a triple entry visa ($120). They have been very helpful in Vancouver and process my visa the same day it is received.

The consulate in LA does not require a ticket nor bank statement. I believe they use to, but don't seem to any more.

They just want the basics at LA Embassy, no bank details or airline, very easy, LA means Sabai Sabai...

The Australian consulate has never asked me for this in 12 years. Last Dec I used the London Embassy and because the website said it was required i took them but they ignored them and handed them straight back to me. Whole thing took about 5 seconds and another 5 to write me a receipt.

The Thai Embassy in France demand both. The bank statement must be the original, complete from start to finish and with the bank letterhead. No letters from the bank will do. "They are too complaisant". And no photo copies, except for the air ticket.

London embassy did not require either tickets or financial for Tourist Visa

Yes I had to show both at the Thai embassy in Washington DC. This was in October of 2010 and I was applying for a double entry. I was unprepared for the requirement so I had neither of these documents on me, but the nice lady gave me their fax number and accepted my passport & application provided that I fax my itinerary and copy of bank statement as soon as I got home.

Just have a copy of an onward ticket & bank statement just in case.

Doesn't mean will will have to show it .... just have it if asked ... coffee1.gif

The NYC consulate did not ask for any corroborating proof when applying for a double entry a few months ago. They asked for some info on the form but nothing was required other than filling in a few blanks on the form from their website.

In Just about every country in the world the official requirement is for an onward ticket for a tourist arrival.

Some countries even get check in staff to verify at check in.

Many countries are slack on this includng Thailand but it is a good policy to have available anyway

I am a British national who is resident in Portugal so I obtain my tourist visas from the Thai embassy in Lisbon. In addition to photos and application form, I have to produce both my Portuguese resident permit and confirmation of return or onward travel. I also take financial proof with me but have never been asked for it.

If I have a one-way ticket, the airline want to see a return ticket, I have a retirement visa so I was accepted. My friend does not and he was forced to buy a one way return ticket.

I fly Thai.

Normally I buy a BKK-CPH-BKK as it has a better price, they are so rich in Denmark that Thai just add 5-10%, if from CPH. So I allways end up with a one way CPH-BKK.

Take care

Accidental caps lock leads to some humerous results. While I was reading that I got a mental image of his plane going down as he was typing.

When getting my last three tourist visas from the Thai Embassy in Washington, DC I was required to provide a copy of the monthly statement from my US bank that I showed at least $500 in my account and I was required to provide a copy of my plane reservations. I have read others who said they were not required to show this when they got a visa but that has not been the case for me. On my first attempt to get a tourist visa from the Thai Embassy, I sent a copy of my monthly bank statement but it was rejected because it did not have the address of the bank on the copy. I had to resend the information along with the cover sheet from the bank in order to get the visa.

I agree that LA does not, but I know Chicago asks for flight information and financial proof.

Actually got my double entry tourist visa today in Brisbane, Australia. Attended the Thai Consulate at about 9.40am with the form filled out, 2x photos and a print out of our itinerary with one way tickets only. Asked a couple of basic questions, paid our fees and out of there 10 mins later. Advised to come back after 1pm same day to collect. Attended at about 1.15pm and out of there at 1.20pm with visa approved and in passport. Painless to say the least and very helpful staff. Nil mention of onward travel or financials. Cheers.

FYI for the OP - Australia isn't a G7 country: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G7

Correct, even for a tourist visa is required to have € 1,500 in your bank account or your parents bank account with the same amount !

No (Australia)

I was once asked to show my Bank Book at the Consulate in HK but that was when I was taking the piss slightly & living in LOS on TR visas & had forgotten some of the Docs for my Non-imm, it was so they would give me another TR so I could go back & get said documents.

On another note, I've just Landed in KL & instead of making me fill out a landing card they took my prints & scanned my Passport, thats a change from when I was last south of Yala. Any changes like that in LOS since I've been away?

I've been back in the UK for a couple of years, does anyone expect me to have any trouble getting a 60-day TR visa from KL? or should get the train or air-shuttle to Penang or Singapore.

You should not have a problem in KL getting the visa.

But they do have their bad days sometimes and ask for financial proof.
