Phuket prisoners undergo scout training

PHUKET: -- Eighty inmates at Phuket Prison – 40 women and 40 men – are currently undergoing a four-day scout training exercise aimed at preparing them for their return into society.

The training exercise was officially opened today (January 26) by Phuket Vice-Governor Somkiet Sangkhaosutthirak, who said at the opening ceremony, “This training will help prisoners improve their behavior.

“When they get back into society, they will be a quality part of it.

“Scout training will teach them the value of morality, harmony, rules, positive attitudes to society, and emotional control when facing problems,” he said.

Along with behavioural training, the scouts will also receive training on first aid, map and compass reading, the history of the Thai Scout movement, and HM the King’s example of devotion to society.

Phuket Prison Commander, Pichit Wannajit, went on to speak about drugs in society and how they are a large, long-term issue.

“Eighty-two per cent of prisoners in Phuket Prison, including 198 foreigners, have been arrested because of drugs. It is the main issue in society.

“Everyone in here may have made a mistake in the past, but they are learning the lessons of life and realise how suffering is the result [of their mistakes]. I believe they will go out into society as quality people.”

He also mentioned progress on plans for the new Phuket Prison.

Mr Pichit said, “Now that the budget of B1.052 bbillion has been approved by the government, the Department of Corrections is writing the terms of reference for contractors who want to bid for the contract.

“After the contract is signed, it will take about three years to construct the new prison at Baan Bang Jo in Thalang District.”

“Phuket prison is currently about 200 per cent over capacity; the prison was designed to hold up to 950 prisoners, but we now have around 3,000,” he said.

They've been scout training the school kids for donkeys years now and what is the outcome?

Violence on the streets, rival gangs shooting each other, injuring innocent bystanders.

How will benefit the prisoners, is beyond me.

May be they know something, I don't know.

I've always understood that the Scout salute was a three fingered salute. The same as the forbidden guesture. Will the prisoners be able to salute each other in the traditional scout manner or...............oh, the mind boggles.

If they can achieve this with a 4 day training exercise, just imagine what 5 days could accomplish!

Maybe the scouts will have to go to a one finger salute so there is no confusion.
