Dr Narong Sahamethapat

BANGKOK: -- The Rural Doctors' Society (RDS) yesterday demanded that Dr Narong Sahamethapat be removed from his post as Health Ministry's permanent secretary.

RDS president Dr Kriangsak Watcharanukulkiat filed a petition with Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, calling on him to "return happiness" to Health Ministry officials by transferring Narong.

The reasons cited were that Narong caused rifts in the ministry, abused his power, urged civil servants to ignore the "returning happiness" policy issued by the health minister and intentionally violated the policies of the government and the National Council for Peace and Order.

As long as the public heath program remains under control of corrupt officials you may rest assured that they will continue to stonewall the new government. Now the hospitals are paid by the number of patients they see at about 2600B/year. This means the more patients they can drag in the more money they get next year. This is a major reason that waiting lines in the hospitals are 3-4 hours.

The new minister of public health wanted a co-pay program for patients and the old clan stonewalled the idea to death.
