SUPHAN BURI — The police commander of Suphan Buri province has been transferred after he ordered a group of newly appointed police officers in the area to pay respect to an influential former Prime Minister.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Chatcharin Sawangwong was instructed to leave his current post in an urgent notice issued yesterday evening by the 7th Region Police headquarters. The order stated that Pol.Maj.Gen. Chatcharin will be informed of his new duties after he reports personally to the headquarters at 8.30 am today.

Although the notice did not state any reason for his transfer, several police officers privately told Khaosod that Pol.Maj.Gen. Chatcharin was removed because he ordered 28 recently promoted Suphan Buri police officers to personally pay respect to former Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa at his residence.

The directive, which was issued on 25 January, instructed the officers to meet with Banharn at 7.30 am on 27 January.

"The instruction described in point 1 of this document is the policy of Suphan Buri Police. Therefore, the officers must attend the aforementioned meeting without exception. All officers must also be punctual," the order reads.

No need to pay any respect to this power-hungry, manipulative and morally corrupt dwarf, because as a prime minister he turned out an utter disaster, managing to stay in office just short of one year before he was forced to resign due to a string of massive corruption scandals (surprise, surprise!).

The two most famous - and allegedly true - anecdotes about "Dopey" (which speak volumes about his intellect):

- During Queen Elizabeth II's state visit in 1996 he allegedly greeted her at the airport with the words, "Welcome, Queen Elizabeth Taylor!".

- He earned his Master's Degree by allegedly submitting his thesis in French, although apart from his mother tongue he doesn't speak any other language.

He belongs to this archaic class of political dinosaurs who we all wish that they would finally go extinct and be delegated to the annals of history, because whenever they are in power they're creating a mess due to their universal ineptitude and unbridled greed.

Yet even when he was officially banned from politics for five years, he just couldn't help but continue meddling behind the scenes. Once you've been at the feeding trough it's hard to wean yourself off of it, I guess.

Yes. The Silpa-Archa family have run Suphanburi and neighbouring Central Plains provinces for decades. Many senior govt. officers and policemen come under his patronage. If they challenge him and his family, they will find themselves shifted elsewhere or sidelined into an inactive post. Other regions have other patronage networks. This is the way things work here. Even in the military too.

I beg to differ, this is more realpolitik than anything you will see in the West. They understand power very well.

It does still amaze me at what gets the people in power riled...just the hint...that some political want-a-be has an audience gets these folks all worked up...no room for anyone except the people in power at the moment...

I have my doubts that a true democracy has a chance among all these bottom feeders...

Be nice to the people on your way up, so that on the way down it hurt less. Be careful is my advice to the current powers to be as its a long way down when eventually their bubble bursts. Be nice to former PM's, respect is part of the culture.
