DMS to extend medical service to Thai workers abroad

BANGKOK, 28 January 2015 (NNT) – The Department of Medical Services (DMS) will be providing medical services to Thai workers in ASEAN, while aiming to extend services to workers in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan this year.

According to the DMS Director-General Suphan Srithamma, the department has been providing medical services to Thai workers, and healthcare information to Thai workers in Singapore, Brunei, and Malaysia.

The main problem for Thai workers aboard, according to the DMS Director General, are the lack of communication skills. This limits the understanding in medical services and diagnosis in foreign countries for Thai workers.

Patients might be forced to return earlier than due and could affect their livelihoods and even their families.

The DMS’ has deployed the medical team to help Thai workers in ASEAN, allowing thorough access to the medical services and database of sickness information and medical procedures, in order to improve the healthcare quality for Thai workers working abroad.

The DMS’ statistics in 2014 points shows five common illness that Thai workers suffer from abroad are muscle and bone symptoms, hypertension, skin diseases, respiratory tract diseases, and gastrointestinal tract diseases.

Some workers also face mental issues from living conditions, stress from debt and living costs, drinking problems, smoking problems, and depression. The medical team will be able to advise workers on these issues.

In 2015, the DMS has planned to extend the healthcare services to Thai workers in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

The DMS will be working with the Royal Thai Embassy in these countries to plan for physical and mental health checkups. Additional events are also planned including the training of healthcare volunteers on the use of basic medicines and keeping good health.
