BANGKOK: -- LOCALS IN tambon Bang Krachao are calling on relevant authorities to investigate and take action against two local factories that they believe are emitting harmful chemicals in the air.

"We smell a strong odour from time to time and it causes nausea and eye irritation," Manee Pan-udom said yesterday. She filed a petition on behalf of the local residents with a government complaints-receiving centre.

The petition was signed by 54 people who have been affected by the alleged emissions.

Jongrak Petchson, an official at the complaint centre, said the two factories had previously been slapped with closure orders earlier due to odour and wastewater problems.

"We will investigate further," he said.

Manee added that she hoped the authorities would check the wastewater treatment system of these two factories to ensure they comply with the law.

"In addition to the bad odour we have to deal with, we have also found that most of our electrical appliances at home are rusting up," she said.

She added that local residents had lodged complaints with the authorities twice before but the problem had not been solved.

This makes me wonder, again, why certain parts of problems are fixed, while identical parts of the same problem never get investigated, prosecuted or resolved. Examples: why were only some of the illegal LED advertising billboards illegally installed at police and fire stations in Bangkok and all over the country taken down? Why are only some factories and mines being investigated, meaning maybe nothing more after a brief news brief? Why are only some land encroachments investigated, especially poor and legitimate but undocumented Thais, unlike Suthep's son who owns property on Koh Samhet that was definitively proven by comparing GPS locations with accepted maps?

Lopsided logic and fossilized corruption is a pair of answers that come to mind. Friends of the current regime is another. Enemies of the current regime, and businesses owned by them are being investigated. In all versions of any answer, the summation is -- shenanigans.
