DNA check on convicted rapist
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- A DNA check on a man previously convicted of rape - and suspected of serial assaults on elderly women in Nakhon Pathom and neighbouring provinces - is underway, with results likely to be known today, Royal Thai Police spokesman Lt-General Prawut Thawornsiri said yesterday.

The unnamed suspect, 43, has a build consistent with that described by many victims - standing about 170 centimetres tall, with dark skin and being muscular, he said.

Police have apprehended the man, and later found he was convicted of raping a woman in Bangkok in 1993 and had served time for that offence.

The man is a native of the North but relocated to Samut Songkhram and Samut Sakhon, which are adjacent to Nakhon Pathom, where most of the 10 rapes of elderly women took place, after the man served his prison term. But Prawut did not say how long that was.

Police issued a sketch of a vehicle - a motorcycle attached with a sidecar - which witnesses say the suspect used when lurking around homes of victims. Investigators later checked out two local motorcycle repair shops, but found no clues about it from mechanics.

A police source said a witness saw a potential suspect a day before the last rape took place. He allegedly showed up at a grocery store owned by the last victim and looked at her in a suspicious way and seemed to pretend to buy items at the store, the source added.
