Note that this is NOT Soi 8 off Second Road near Central Festival and there is no mention of any Thai customers being detained or even questioned. I realise this 'crackdown' has only just been announced, so I guess time will tell whether they're going to extend these little 'meet and greet' operations to the Farang strip.

Any suggestion that they will remove prostitution from Pattaya is laughable, but they might close a few venues for the sake of appearances - no biggie IMO. Nice little earner for their pension funds, though. One can only assume that the 14 women who were arrested here were simply waiting for a friend to finish work at the 7-11 before heading off to the temple.

Age & Nationality checks were made on staff members of the bars and licenses were checked in each of the venues. Banglamung Police did arrest 14 women who were found working in Karaoke Bars in the area but they were fined and later released.

Pattaya's bars and gogos have been tightly regulated for years and bars that step out of line are regularly raided and sometimes shut down for a month or so. Absolutely nothing new and entirely unconnected to the subject of this thread.

I'm just saying it's not new, certainly in Pattaya. Gogos and bars are regularly raided and the girls checked for ID. Underage girls are sent home and non-Thais are jailed and deported. Of course, both re-appear fairly soon afterwards! It makes a good story for Howard, but the scene in Pattaya is already fairly well regulated.

The real scary figure that is attached to this number is the number of people whom gain employment directly attached to this industry, cashiers, security, food vendors, cleaners, bar staff and so forth. It could be more practical that 1M people are involved in the industry by some direct measure. The number of 2.25 is massive, and while I have no accurate data otherwise, I say its a very unlikely number.

And remember not to forget to count the people reliant on prostiTOOTS income.

I can only speak for the Mrs village of 500 homes, one girl there worked as a whore, mostly the daughters are shopkeepers, hairdressers, housewives, teachers and even civil servants, pharmacists and nurses. The idea that whoremongers are somehow doing a charitable job keeping people In Issan from starvation belongs long in the past. Prostitution is largely for the lazy, greedy and stupid these days for girls from Issan.

Guess you're right, most Thai girls in this area are not sex workers at all, they might just queue up for some food or beverages, or sell it.

Unfortunately, myth as spread in some Farang Yellow Press and TV has it the other way around: They permanently make people believe that *all girls* in the queue might be prostitutes, for for God's sake (and economies' welfare) beware of them.

Even in some Farang Embassies some Thai girls feel like forced to declare that they are *not prostitutes*, it's a real horror to many a Thai girl. Many are ashamed of being bashed like this, and cynical Farangs then point at their faces and yell "Look at this one! She's blushed, so she's a liar!" I guess that's one the real problem for Thailand: not their girls, but Thai girls' image in Europe and North America.

I don't get why both of you completely disregard the points he made. Ok they're not super riveting (as is this whole topic, in which everything has already been said on this forum multiple times over) but what's wrong with him as a person?

He's making the point that there are a LOT of shades of gray in prostitution in Thailand. To the point where even the customer and supplier don't even consider it prostitution. And a lot of that doesn't even happen in or near entertainment venues. For example I paid bills for a gas station girl for some time after she decided she was going to be my gig. But it wasn't a serious relationship to either of us, it was just fun while it lasted, and -for her- financially convenient.

There used to be some in Old Bangkok, off KhaoSan and Soi Rambuttri. Dont remember any Thai Shakespeare scenes, unfortunately, but I'd love to see one, preferably Open Air. Cabaret monologues pointing at Thai society are performed on some stages in Pattaya. It isn't all that bad...

A fine line, that doubtless will be drawn by the world famous RTP. The

police LOVE fuzzy laws, because that allows them to decide something

is sort of illegal, and then of course, time for the shakedown and monthly

payments. The term " illegal entertainment venues" is sort of absurd.

Either they have the correct licenses and should be left alone, or if they

do not have the correct licenses, then arrest the local police who allowed

them to flagrantly stay open for business, when the local police knew

damn well they were illegal....

The legal loophole is that the bars only release the girls for money and they don't make money from the sex act itself. It us up to the girls. But isn't that still selling the girl's time for money... Bar fine? Same as an escort service I guess.

If they ever start shutting down the gogos and beer bars that offer girls with a barfine it will be the end of Thailand's tourist industry. I would guess 40% drop within a year if they really enforced laws and tried to end all prostitution.

If thais wanted to end prostitution they could just start arresting the girls and pretty soon there would be no girls in the bars. The bars would close. For this reason it's total BS people saying there's a legal loophole and that's why they don't do it. Catching a prostitute in the act is really a joke, just have any thai guy work for the police and make an offer. There, prostitute caught selling sex. They could easily empty out all these bars and brothels in a couple weeks, just by enforcing existing law.

Another thing is posters writing it will effect thai tourism, sure it will, but contrary to what people write here, 90% of people visit Thailand not for the prostitutes. So Thailand will lose about 10%, and the majority of that 10% will be the low class beer louts who frequent Thailand on a regular basis. The tourism lost to beer louts could easily be regained by normal tourists if the country cleans up it's image.

Also, another point that's BS is that these girls do not have other opportunities. Of course they do. Don't tell me beautiful young girls will starve in Isaan if they stop being whores. As far as I know not many people are starving in Issan, maybe all the men that leech off them will start working a bit more. It's not like Somalia.
