Double Bombs Target High-End BKK Shopping Mall

BANGKOK – Two homemade explosives were set off near one of Thailand's largest shopping malls in downtown Bangkok Sunday night, police say.

The explosions took place at 8:10 pm. Two loud blasts were heard and cloud of smoke gathered on the walkway that connects Siam Paragon shopping mall to the Siam skytrain station. No injuries have been reported.

"The EOD team confirms that the explosions near entrance to Paragon were caused by two improvised explosives that were placed behind a power transformer," Pol Lt Gen Prawut Thawornsiri, assistant to the chief of Royal Thai Police, tweeted late Sunday night.

Police officers initially told the press that the explosion was caused by a malfunctioning electric transformer.

Pol.Maj.Gen. Sombat Milintachinda, head of the EOD team at Pathumwan Police Station, confirmed to Khaosod that the explosives were homemade "pipe bombs.”

Pieces of watches and metal were found at the scene and collected for further investigation by the police.

As a safety precaution, the skytrain suspended its service at Siam station for 30 minutes after the explosions.

Is it just me, or does this seem like a botched / amateurish effort ? Put me in a speeding cab with a bucket of thumb tacks and I could injure several people in that part of BKK - even after the shops had closed. Either mistimed or someone looking for attention - it will be interesting to see where this goes.

Two bombs rattle luxury shopping mall in Bangkok

(Reuters) - Two small bombs exploded outside a luxury shopping mall in Bangkok on Sunday causing minor damage but no injuries in an attack which Thai police said was aimed at raising tension in a city living under martial law.

The bombs were the first to shake the Thai capital since the military seized power in May to end months of sometimes deadly street protests in the city.

"There were improvised explosive devices detonated by a digital clock," said Police Lieutenant General Prawut Thawonrsiri, a spokesman for the Royal Thai Police.

Prawut said the motive of the attack appeared to be to create panic rather than take lives.

Police said two improvised explosive devices were placed behind power transformers on an elevated walkway linking the overhead rail line to the upmarket Siam Paragon mall in central Bangkok.

Two "homemade" bombs exploded near a popular shopping mall in downtown Bangkok on Sunday evening (Feb 1), leaving one man with minor injuries, police said.

BANGKOK: Two "homemade" bombs exploded near a popular shopping mall in downtown Bangkok on Sunday evening (Feb 1), leaving one man with minor injuries, police said.

The blasts took place at around 8.00pm (9.00pm Singapore time) near the busy shopping centre well visited by tourists and local residents, with police initially reporting they were caused by an electrical fault.

Later on Sunday, national police spokesman Prawut Thavornsiri told AFP further investigations had revealed the explosions were triggered by two IEDs (improvised explosive devices).

"Two homemade bombs exploded on a walkway between Siam BTS (skytrain) and Siam Paragon mall. They were hidden behind electric controls," he said, adding one man had received minor injuries. Further investigations are under way, he added, without providing more details.
