Torty
News reports are still saying it was a transformer - I guess this is a better story for international consumption? http://www.khaosodenglish.com/detail.php?newsid=1422806538 Typical crap reporting from Khao Sod. noitom
Typical Thai reporting. First they report it was two "transformer" explosions so as to minimize the possibility of fear of terrorism. Then they back track and state to IEDs planted under the BTS walkover to Siam Paragon. Wow, these Thais really know how to create doubt uncertainty and suspicion about their competency.
The Dancer
This ain't got nothing to do with the situation in the country. Martial law has brought happiness to people. Even those who were put off at first are fine after getting their attitude adjusted. So that's not it. I am putting my money on a couple of pissed-off Andy Murray supporters. He got his head handed to him at the Australian Open today which must have caused a lot of English teachers to lose a bundle on bet365. And what better way to blow off steam then toss IEDs at an ATM.
The Dancer
Or it could be the same two migrant Burmese who confessed to killing the British couple on Koh Tao. Maybe they broke out of prison, took a bus to Bkk, blew up the mall, broke back into prison without anybody being the wiser. Stranger things have happened. I would check under their fingernails for gunpowder. Could get lucky,

webfact
Two bomb explosions rock in front of Siam Paragon BANGKOK: -- Two explosions rocked Siam Paragon shopping centre near the BTS's Siam Square station sending night shoppers to run in panic, and forcing the BTS to suspend service at the station. Initially the two explosions were thought to be from electric transformers, but after Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) police inspected the scene, they found explosive fragments of home-made bombs and believed the two bombs were planted near the transformers . Nobody was injured in the explosions which went off at about 8.02 pm Sunday night near the second-floor connected walkway from Siam Paragon to Siam Square station. Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Lt-Gen Prawuthi Thavornsiri confirmed the explosions were caused by bombs, not by transformers as earlier believed. Shortly after the explosions, Siam Paragon quietly advised customers to leave as it was going to close two hours ahead of schedule. Sky train service was suspended half and hour to facilitate EOD police and soldiers to comb the area looking for more evidence, and clear the area of bombs before allowing service to continue Monday morning. But BTS resumed before 9 pm just only its exit to Siam Paragon from Siam Square station was closed. A rush into a definitive statement just has to be made then, as usual, has to be corrected. Nothing wrong with saying the matter is under investigation and a statement will be made when the situation is clearer but the authorities just love to show they are on top of things when nothing could be further from the truth.

webfact
No one hurt as small blasts rattle Bangkok mall shoppersBy THANYARAT DOKSONEBANGKOK (AP) — Two explosions at a transit hub near major downtown shopping malls in the Thai capital on Sunday night were caused by small improvised explosive devices, but no one was hurt and damage was minor, police said. The explosions occurred about 8 p.m. at the Siam Square station of Bangkok's Skytrain system, which serves several shopping centers including the upmarket Paragon mall. The incident came at a time of slightly raised political temperatures in Thailand, as the country's ruling junta has tightened its clampdown on critics of its rule.Police initially said the explosions were caused by a malfunctioning transformer, but National Police spokesman Lt. Gen. Prawut Thawornsiri later said they were caused by devices that were probably not meant to hurt anyone. Service at the station was temporarily suspended, but resumed after about an hour."We think the intent of the bombers was not to harm anyone but was rather to cause trouble and to damage the overall mood," Prawut told The Associated Press. "We have not assumed that it was politically motivated but we are pursuing a few motives in our investigation."There has been little open opposition, and virtually no violent opposition, to the military regime that took over from an elected civilian government after a coup d'etat last May. Martial law, imposed days before the coup, remains in effect under the dual administration of the junta and a military-appointed interim Cabinet, and any dissent is strongly discouraged. When members of the ousted government last week mildly protested sanctions imposed against their leader, former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, they were chastised by the military authorities and called in for meetings known as "attitude adjustment."Similar mild criticism from a senior visiting U.S State Department official, including a call to lift martial law, also drew umbrage from Thailand's government.Thailand has a history of conspiratorial politics, and the government is just as likely as its opponents to be considered the perpetrator of the bombings, since they could be seen to justify its repression. There is also a tradition of so-called "third hands" taking unsavory actions to advice their own agendas. A list of suspects would have to include as well students of vocational schools, notorious for gang violence and the use of small home-made explosive devices. One such school is not far from where Sunday's small blasts took place. Many, if not most bombings in Bangkok go unsolved, including a series of blasts that killed three people and wounded about two dozen as Thais were celebrating the New Year in 2007.Political violence in the capital, especially aggressive street demonstrations, became more common after a 2006 coup toppled Yingluck's brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, from the prime minister's job.-- (c) Associated Press 2015-02-
