BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha yesterday called on political groups to not make any political moves until general elections are held.

He was referring to a statement he made during his weekly TV address on Friday, in which he said he would allow political groups to get together and hold meetings or speak against their political rivals. However, he said, they would not be allowed to stage protests or rallies.

"I have to accept the fact that it is normal for politicians to make political moves, but the country needs to move forward. If you want to fight politically, wait until the elections are held."

Regulations had to be improved, he said, otherwise history would be repeated. "A party should not be allowed to say that because it has won majority votes, it has a 100 per cent right to do anything and that it does not have to follow law."

I imagine this includes Suthep's reinvented PDRC, now a formally recognized foundation for the promotion of whatever.

Maybe all the political parties can take this opportunity to implement some democratic policies and practises within their parties. It is so amusing when the parties claim to believe in democracy yet the rank and file have so little genuine say in the leadership and policies.

Isn't that magnanimous of him. NORMAL? NORMAL? It is absolutely necessary to the entire process of having elections that politicians can CAMPAIGN which means they have to gather and discuss and talk against their opponents and give rallies to elucidate the platform they are running on...advertising...TV...radio...everything associated with a political campaign. And campaigns usually start at least one year before the elections so yes, he needs to allow it now or it's all a shame!

The general really needs to set a firm-date for the election IMO, then announce what period will be acceptable to him, for politicking & campaigning prior to the election, three months or six months or whatever ?

But I don't currently expect this to happen, it's all a moving-feast, thanks to the elephant in the room.

If you tracked all the so-called reforms and constitutional drafts, the NCPO is attempting to have its absolute power under Articles 17 & 44 of the Interim Charter memorialized within the constitution, organic laws, and independent organizations (was 4 now 7). Then it can remain covert as a "shadow government" to protect the interests of the oligarchy while it allows elected officials to play at democracy but safely shielded from having any real power.

Mostly in countries with lots of genuine political parties and where it's illegal to pay party members apart from a handful of party executives. Those countries also tend to thrown upon criminal fugitives owning political parties and controlling them from afar.
