The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau hopes to host an ASEAN festival by the end of the year. The bureau will propose the idea to the Thai Cabinet in March.

Supawan Teerrarat, the vice president of Strategic and Business Development at TCEB, stated at a recent press conference that hosting an ASEAN festival in December would boost year-end travel. The bureau and 21 public and private organizations agree that the festival would increase tourism during an otherwise slow period.

The theme for the first-ever ASEAN festival would be Countdown to AEC. The bureau proposes hosting the festival in Bangkok throughout December to boost confidence and reinforce Thailand as a hub for events and festivals.

ASEAN countries, which include Japan, China, South Korea, India, New Zealand and Australia, would be invited to participate. Each country would organize pavilions that highlighted the country’s arts and culture, lifestyle, creativity, tourism, sports and entertainment. An AEC Expo would also be hosted for investment and trade for B2C and B2B. This would attract both business professionals and tourists.

The ASEAN festival project will be proposed to the Cabinet for approval next month. The bureau will have nine months to plan and execute the event; a process that typically takes two years.

The TCEB is estimating that between 6 and 10 million visitors from Thailand and foreign countries would attend the event. The bureau expects the ASEAN festival to accelerate growth of foreign festival attendees from 3-5% to 10%.

The ASEAN festival could turn into an annual event, but will need active supporters to make the first-ever festival a success. The TCEB says it already has support from: the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Ministry of Culture, Thai Hotels Association, Thailand Chamber of Commerce, Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, Thailand Incentive & Convention Association, Thai Exhibition Association and several other organizations.

This list below shows the list of 10 countries that belong to ASEAN:

Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The list shown in the article are countries that are members only in the sense of regional memberships, which is totally different than ASEAN. The other countries shown are countries that can provide visitors with money to come to this festival.

Sooner or later Thailand as a hub for events and festivals will run into Thailand as a hub of military coups.

Holding an ASEAN Festival in Thailand before approval of a new constitution, lifting martial law, and elections is risking adverse consequences that will alienate Thailand from the ASEAN-6.
